London, United Kingdom Natural History Museum Full time

**About Us**

**We are **a world-class visitor attraction and leading science research centre. We use the Museum's unique collections and our unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. W**e care for more than 80 million objects spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually and 16 million visits to our website.**

Today the Museum is more relevant and influential than ever. By attracting people from a range of backgrounds to work for us, we can continue to look at the world with fresh eyes and find new ways of doing things.

We employ 900 staff in a variety of roles, all united by our vision of a future where people and planet thrive. We need everyone to have the passion and drive to help us with our mission to create advocates for our planet and inspire millions to care about the natural world.

This is an exciting time to join the Museum as we have secured investment from the UK Government to build a new science and digitisation centre at Thames Valley Science Park, University of Reading. The purpose-built centre will house much of the Museum's collection and will include laboratories, digitisation suites, collaborative research spaces, conservation labs and workspaces.

**Diversity and inclusion matter to us.**

Our vision is of a future where both people and the planet thrive. Diversity is one of our core values and we strive to build a workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. All new staff who join us learn about the importance of diversity and inclusion to the Museum and how to contribute to creating an inclusive environment.

We know we have more to do, but we are committed to ensuring that everyone who works at the Museum feels they can thrive and feel valued and respected.

**Job Summary**

Despite their importance, fungi have been historically under-researched compared with plants and animals. Of an estimated 2.5 million fungal species, only 300,000 have been identified and named. DNA-based identification has the potential to plug this gap.

The NHM’s lichen collection is amongst the largest of its kind in the world with over 400,000 specimens including around 7,000 types. The collection is an important resource for understanding lichen diversity through time. As part of a wider DEFRA-funded fungal genomics project in collaboration with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the NHM will be sequencing the whole genome of at least 1,200 of its lichen type specimens to bring about a paradigm shift in the way lichenised fungi are identified and understood.

The Lichen Systematist will play a key role in the delivery of this project. The post holder will have a good knowledge of lichens and their taxonomy. Supported by the Lichen Curator and other project team members at the NHM, they will plan and deliver the specimen sampling strategy for lichens to maximise the scientific impact of the project and ensure compliance with relevant policies and legislation. They will also play a lead role in the analysis, interpretation and dissemination of the results.

The project team at NHM also includes curatorial assistants, laboratory staff and a bioinformatician. The post holder will work closely with the Lichen Curator and NHM project team and with the project team at Kew.
**Main tasks and responsibilities**
- Plan and deliver a specimen sampling strategy for lichen types at NHM.
- Work with the curation and registry teams at NHM to ensure that sampling complies with relevant legislation and with NHM policies and procedures.
- Sample lichen specimens for DNA sequencing following agreed protocols and support Curatorial Assistants with this task.
- Contribute to the analysis and interpretation of molecular data generated from sequenced samples.
- Report against project milestones and deliverables as required.
- Contribute to project outputs (e.g. peer-reviewed publications, reports).

**Person Specification**
- Relevant higher qualification (MSc or relevant postgraduate experience is essential, a PhD is desirable), or equivalent experience.
- Experience of working in natural history collections
- Computer literate, and experience with databases.
- Experience of generation and analysis of DNA sequence data desirable.
- Good communication skills
- Experience of publishing your work.
- Demonstrable ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with various stakeholders

**Thriving at the Museum: the way we work**

We are proud to work at the Museum and have identified the qualities we all need to embody to reach our shared ambition. This sits alongside the Museum’s values and forms the framework for the way we work.

**We are ambitious.** To make a difference on a global scale we are big and bold in our thinking and set goals which may seem impossibly high. We act with integrity, but we are not rigid or inflexible. We are excellent at what we do and look for opportunities to make a difference for the Museum wherever we can.
