The UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology Department of Clinical and Movement Neurosciences is a world-leading group that brings together expertise across the clinical and basic science spectrum of the physiology and pathology of human movement and movement disorders.
Professor Abramov’s group is internationally renowned for its contribution to mitochondrial biology, intracellular signalling and redox biology. Using strategies that integrate molecular biology, biochemistry, and biophysics in neuroscience, we have identified novel components of mechanisms of neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders, found new aspects of mitochondrial physiology and the role of reactive oxygen species in physiology and pathology.
We have numerous collaborative scientific and clinical research links across the Institute of Neurology and UCL, as well as collaborative networks in UK, Spain, Italy, USA and has close ties with Charities and Industry.
**About the role**:
We are seeking a motivated Research Fellow to join a team working with patient-derived materials (fibroblasts, stem cell derived models and tissues) and primary neurons to i) identify the molecular and cellular mechanisms of CO neurotoxicity; ii) determine the effects on small molecules the protection of neurons and astrocytes in vivo and in situ.
You will be expected to appraise scientific information and data, develop statistical analysis and drafting of scientific manuscripts, abstracts, posters and oral presentations for national and international meetings. This will require an ability to critically interpret data and synthesize complex ideas and express these aspects clearly in written and oral form.
You will liaise with research support staff, post-doctoral scientists and students within the group, across the UCL and with collaborators, including researchers at the Department of Neuroscience, Physiology, Pharmacology UCL.
The post is available from 01 April 2024 and is funded by the CO Research Trust for one year in the first instance.

**About you**:
You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline, knowledge in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology and the ability to organise own work without extensive supervision and in response to deadlines. Experience in live cell imaging, iPSC cell, animal model and mitochondrial physiology, intracellular signaling, redox biology is also required for the role.
**What we offer**:
Appointment as Research Fellow is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be as Research Assistant (salary £37,332 - £39,980 per annum) with appointment as Research Fellow being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
