Hospital Play Specialist

The Paediatric Emergency Department at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, have opportunities for either those with experience in the Emergency Department setting or those that are willing to expand their portfolio supporting as a hospital play specialist.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated play specialist who is able to work autonomously as well as part of a team; who is keen to develop and assist us to take the service forward.

We require an individual with a team working approach who will be flexible to our service needs and passionate about delivering high quality care. In return we will offer a structured development package and the opportunity to be a valued member of our team.

To assist the Paediatric Emergency Department play specialist (HPS) in meeting the emotional welfare of children and young people who are receiving care on the Paediatric Emergency Department.

To minimise the effects of hospitalisation, injury or ill health for the child or young person in the hospital.

To assist the play specialist in planning, implementing and evaluation the play needs of the child or young person.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trustprovides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and brand new, state of the art Emergency Department is in the process of being completed.

RESPECT - COMPASSION - TEAMWORK - PROFESSIONALISM

1. To assist the HPS with organising, participating and supervising play
activities for children and young people, giving extra consideration to children with additional needs.
2. To be involved in the preparation, distraction and recovery of children
before, during and after invasive procedures and other interventions.
3. Will maintain records to the required professional standard and to provide, where required, reports and evaluation of work undertaken.
4. To provide ongoing support and relevant professional advice for
parents/carers, siblings and other family members, to encourage their
involvement in therapeutic play activities.
5. To ensure that the child’s emotional, social, physical, intellectual and
developmental needs are met by liaising with other health professionals and educational staff.

6. Will assist the HPS in making the ward environment appropriate for the
needs of child or young person.

7. Will assist the HPS in the training of hospital play specialist students on
hospital placements.
8. Will be aware of safeguarding issues and procedures and maintain patient confidentiality in all aspects of work.
9. Will refer parental concerns or medical enquiries to the medical or nursing team as appropriate
