We are currently recruiting for an Occupational Therapy Assistant to join our dedicated team at the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) within the Hartsholme Centre.

The role of the Occupational Therapy Assistant is a multi-faceted role and pivotal in supporting patients during their admission, working together towards discharge and their on-going recovery journey.

**In this role you will**:
Support the Occupational Therapist based on the unit in facilitating meaningful interventions to patients both on and off the unit.
Facilitate/co-facilitate groups or one to one session, that cover the areas of self-care, leisure interests, vocational, domestic or social skills as directed by the Occupational Therapist. Provide interventions that focus on promoting independence and meaningful social engagement, to meet the individual recovery focused needs of patients in this setting. Interventions include community integration. Some lone working will be expected as part of the role.

To provide effective evidence based specialist clinical services for service users referred to the speciality under the direction of qualified clinicians.

To ensure a high standard of care for all patients by effective communication with patients, carers and the referral source.

To work closely with social care colleagues and the multi-disciplinary team, seeking opportunities to promote social integration to the benefit of service users and effective service delivery.

To organise and deliver individual clinical programmes as agreed with supervising clinicians in line with clinical governance and professional standards.

Clinical practice/ work practice
- Deliver therapeutic activity programmes according to defined protocols, to meet defined clinical outcomes
- Understanding of a large range of non-routine work procedures and practices which require base level theoretical knowledge gained through relevant training and experience.
- Assessing and teaching service users under the supervision of a qualified therapist
- To be involved in teaching and providing instruction to relatives, carers and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of occupational therapy and to ensure a consistent approach to service user care.
- To contribute to the assessment of a service user’s understanding of treatment proposals, and work within the legal framework with clients who lack capacity to consent.
- To support other staff and students as appropriate
- To respond positively to organisational change and be flexible with work practices depending on need

Health and Safety
- To ensure the safety of service user’s and staff at all times.
- To participate in risk assessments, implement the management plan and participate in the review of risk within the service users’ programme of care.
- To liaise with relevant Trust managers in order to ensure that medical devices and equipment are appropriately managed, maintained and repaired; including staff training (if appropriate)
- To adhere to all Trust Health and Safety policies

Communication and Record Keeping
- To ensure effective communication with service users, carers, members of the multi-disciplinary team and outside agencies
- To represent occupational therapy in a positive manner, attending Trust forums where relevant
