**About the Department**

The Registry is responsible for the central elements of student administration for the School, with specialist teams including Assessment and Progression, Curriculum and Quality Assurance, Fees and Funding, Student Records, Student Strategic Initiatives, and Visa Compliance. It sits within the Student and Academic Services Directorate alongside Academic Services, Access, Participation, and Student Success, Careers, Student Advice and Wellbeing, and Student Experience, Engagement and Retention.

The role will sit within the Assessments and Progression Team who are responsible for managing the successful administration of student progression and award, and exam and resubmission periods.

**About you**

We are looking for a proactive manager who is dedicated to improving the student experience. You will have a sound understanding of assessment related administrative processes and experience of managing a team. You will be able to motivate your direct reports, and wider Assessments and Progression Team, to deliver key aspects of the student journey to a high standard. You like to evaluate activities to ensure they’re as effective as they can be, and enjoy problem-solving and take a solution focussed approach. You enjoy working with students, professional services staff and academics to improve the student experience for all students.

**About the role**

This is a key role in the Assessments and Progression team and will play a big part in the overall success of the assessment cycle. The role holder will directly manage two team members. They will also work closely with the Assessment and Progression Manager and the other Assessment Lead Officer.

The Assessment Lead Officer will have a sound understanding of assessment and progression for all SOAS students (including Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Postgraduate Research both on campus and those studying via Online Distance Learning, partnership and partnership arrangements) and will continue to develop their understanding to ensure the provision of a high quality service. They will have a comprehensive understanding of School policies and procedures and the broader Higher Education sector.

They will conduct analysis and identify practical options to resolve issues and problems with short to medium consequences, and to put forward or operationalise recommendations on more complex situations. They will liaise with external agencies and other departments of SOAS to ensure the prompt and accurate operation of processes around student assessment, progression and award.

**Person specification**

You will need to demonstrate:

- Experience of working successfully in a student-facing and administrative team in Higher Education or a similar environment.
- Experience of line management of staff and motivating a team.
- Experience of providing a high level of customer care and advice in a busy, demanding and complex environment with the ability to identify potential process improvements.
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly and accurately, both verbally and in writing, taking account of the needs of the recipient
- Ability to work as part of diverse teams and groups, working collaboratively to deliver operational and strategic objectives.
- Ideally, you will also demonstrate:

- Experience in managing assessments and examinations within a Higher Education or similar institution
- Experience of identifying and implementing creative improvements to procedures and systems.
- Experience of identifying and sharing good practice within a team.
