Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist

We are seeking to recruit an innovative and dynamic locum glaucoma consultant to join our team at Torbay on a temporary basis for up 12 months in the first instance.

This would be with a view to creation of a substantive post once an additional eye theatre has been completed. This would be an excellent opportunity for Higher Trainees who have completed their training and are on the Specialist Register, or an established consultant seeking a career change to move to a progressive Ophthalmology department in this beautiful part of the country.

The department provides a very wide range of ophthalmic services including VR, medical retina and uveitis, paediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, oculoplastics and cornea. The department also has a talented and enthusiastic body of nurses, orthoptists and optometrists who are trained to work in glaucoma, post-op cataract, cornea, macular and botox clinics.

Torbay has an excellent reputation for delivering quality medical education and we regularly have students joining our department from Plymouth and Exeter Medical Schools as well as teaching Physician Associate, BSc students, Paramedics and Nursing students.

This is a 6-12 month NHS locum post in the first instance and has arisen due to demands on our Glaucoma service within the Department. We are looking for an enthusiastic, competent general ophthalmologist with a specialist interest in glaucoma. The post is a full time post and may include general as well as specialist clinics, and cataract surgery. There would be a 1 in 9 general on-call commitment. There is a separate sub regional vitreoretinal on-call. Shared office space and secretarial support will be provided for the period of the post.

To provide high quality consultant delivered care to patients including clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are provided to all patients attending the hospital.

To be proactive in ensuring that all patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making, whilst ensuring our standard to deliver safe quality and performance are delivered and sustained.

To provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervised and train the juniors and specialty doctors. To be proactive the in the department’s clinical governance agenda and take on leadership roles to support continuous learning and improvement, thereby abiding by the clinical and corporate governance policies of the Trust.

Torbay, often described as the “ English Riviera”, has 22 miles of coastline around Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, affording opportunities for sailing and water sports, is located 15 miles from Dartmoor’s breath-taking moorland, with easy access to Exeter, Plymouth and the M5.
