**Caretaker**
The new Aberdare Community School building was officially opened in 2015 and includes a Lecture Theatre, state of the art computer and technology facilities, a large modern school hall and auditorium, as well as a modern restaurant. The school is linked to the Sobell Leisure Centre and has extensive sporting facilities.
The Caretaker will be directly responsible to the Site Manager and SLT for the satisfactory completion of their duties. The Caretaker is required to undertake the following duties in order that the school buildings and environs are maintained to the high standards expected by pupils and staff of the school.
**Hours of Duties**
The Caretaker will work a nominal 35 hours per week as set out below.
Monday - Friday 08.00 a.m. - 3.30 p.m.
This includes 30 minutes for lunch each day.
However a “flexible” approach to duty hours is essential as the school can potentially operate a community hire facility which may require working outside of these hours for which an overtime payment would be made or alternatively a temporary adjustment of hours.
**Wage**
Wages will be paid in accordance with the National Agreement on Pay and Conditions of Service. Wages are paid monthly around the 15th day of the month.
**DUTIES**
1. Responsible for the security of the premises and to respond to any calls which may be made as a result of the burglar alarm being activated; (the caretaker is the fourth contact on the call register when alarm is triggered).
**N.B. Subject to the Local Authority Guidelines Document on Security of School Premises the Caretaker, being responsible for security, will be the custodian of keys for those premises for which they have responsibility. This does not mean that the Caretaker is the sole owner of the keys and they must relinquish the keys to the Headteacher when requested to do so.**
2. Responsible for the lighting and heating of the premises;
3. Responsible for the cleaning of the premises including:
- i. Cleaning personal cleaning area;
ii. Monitoring cleaning undertaken by contractors’ cleaners. Any deficiencies should initially be reported to the Site Manager and SLT.
iii. The Site Manager has a check list to assist the Caretaker in carrying out this monitoring role.
iv. Responsibilities during the day, for regular checks of the toilets regarding supplies of toilet paper, soap in wash basins, female hygiene supplies etc. When cleaners are not available, for cleaning / unblocking toilets and emergency spillage’s as directed by the Site Manager / SLT.
v. Cleaning toilets following evening use where other arrangements have not been made.
vi. Removal of graffiti from walls etc;
4 Portage duties; to include moving deliveries from reception area promptly to relevant departments, paper deliveries to reprographics etc.
5 Supervision of the whole of the premises in accordance with the hours set out above;
6 Daily routines to include litter picks internally and externally after break and lunch to ensure the building and site is kept to a high standard of cleanliness. All paved areas within the site are kept clean, tidy, litter and weed free.
7 The Caretaker is also responsible for keeping grassed areas litter free, strimming and grass cutting as required.
8 Record and update position of service outlets (gas, electric, oil and water), and assist with location for inspection purposes etc., as and when necessary;
9 Cleaning all surface gullies. During periods of dry weather, drainage gullies must be kept topped up with water so as to avoid smells;
10 Disinfecting, as required by the Site Manager and SLT, all drains, W.C.’s and refuse bins;
11 Ensuring that all doors, windows gates and bus barriers are locked each night.
12 The school facilities are widely advertised for use by the community outside of normal school hours. The Caretaker must personally superintend the outside use of premises; (This would include overtime payments for additional hours)
13 Ensuring that all premises are thoroughly cleaned, aired and, if appropriate, heated by the re-opening day after all holiday periods;
14 The Caretaker is responsible for checking the receipt of cleaning materials and maintaining consumption records of water, gas, electricity, oil and any other fuel (see attached procedural document);
15 During periods of severe weather, it shall be the Caretaker’s responsibility to take such measures as may be necessary to prevent freezing of water systems and paths etc., so as to keep premises functional; this includes ensuring grit bins are full and there is a supply of grit in storage.
16 To carry out duties as required, e.g. putting up shelves and display boards, changing tap washers, painting etc, in line with qualifications and training of the post holder;
17 Good housekeeping in line with Fire Service recommendations including:
- i. responding to their periodic instructions;
ii. maintaining correct fire notices throughout the building, checking fire exit
