The Major Projects Commercial Delivery team are working across England to improve our strategic network and release economic capacity faster than at any other time in the last 50 years. With secure funding for 50 major construction projects in the next 10 years, we need are looking for passionate team players who can own and deliver successful outcomes with integrity. You will be joining a team of over 900 delivery professionals in programmes that are set to change highways construction, influencing the infrastructure market to drive improved productivity, reduce carbon and deliver increased digital capability. **What is the role?**

The Head of Commercial is responsible for protecting National Highways commercial interests, leading the development and implementation of commercial and procurement strategies, contract management practices, supply chain performance management and governance for major projects within the National Highways programme of work.

As Head of Commercial Delivery, you will work alongside Major Projects Commercial Directors guiding a team of commercial professionals to ensure effective commercial delivery. You will work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders in a matrix management environment providing commercial advice and guidance to protect National Highways commercial interests delivering Major Projects capital schemes and programmes of work.

**What will you be doing?**
- Providing commercial advice - provide commercial advice to pursue opportunities and mitigate threats to success in delivery of the National Highways programme, ensuring scheme outcomes are successfully delivered.
- Managing supplier relationships - Using experience and professional knowledge to build relationships with the supply chain to encourage continual improvement of supply chain performance and establish effective commercial relationships.
- Providing programme leadership - work with regional and programme leaders /sponsors and project teams to influence regional or schemes strategies, translating objectives from the business plan to meet the scheme or programme goals and objectives, and ensuring commercial success in delivering these objectives.
- Ensuring effective governance - influence the commercial policy compliance for the schemes or programmes ensuring integrity within the defined areas of responsibility.
- Developing high performing teams - work with the commercial and wider teams to create an environment that supports the continual improvement in commercial management at National Highways.
- Ensuring robust contract Management and assurance - ensure robust contract management and compliance with contractual processes to ensure value for money is maintained in delivery of National Highways schemes.
- Developing capability - Take responsibility for the development of yourself and others, demonstrating continual professional development, working collaboratively to ensure lessons learned are shared and coaching others to ensure success.
- Making effective decisions - using professional experience to take effective decisions selecting options most likely to mitigate commercial threats and realise efficiency opportunities to achieve sustainable development.

**What do you need to be successful?**
- Significant experience as commercial professional in a relevant industry.
- Significant experience of leading and inspiring high performing teams including matrix management.
- Have capacity to absorb complex and diverse information and use strong practical influencing skills, both internally and externally to optimise National Highways commercial programme interest.
- Have or be working towards a professional qualification in areas but not limited to RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers), Charted Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) or equivalent.
- Have detailed knowledge and experience of an industry standard form of tendering and contract management and commercial assurance such as NEC (New Engineering Contract) forms of contract or an equivalent.
- Experienced in using commercial management to translate programme and organisational aims into scheme and programme delivery.
- Able to communicate with, influence and manage the expectations of a range of internal and external stakeholders in matrix management environment.
