As an Orthotic Assistant in the Orthotics Department you’ll play a key part in ensuring the best possible care for our patients by undertaking a range of administrative responsibilities providing a pleasant and efficient service.

It’s a busy and varied role - you’ll need to be well organised and an excellent communicator with a positive approach to customer care. An understanding of confidentiality is essential along with basic keyboard skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. In addition, you should be educated to GCSE level (or equivalent) and have experience of dealing with the public.

To provide a pleasant and efficient service to Orthotic Department patients. This will include reception duties, registration of patients, booking appointments, running Orthotic clinics, filing, telephone queries, ordering supplies and dealing with deliveries. You'll provide face to face contact for patients collecting their prescribed orthosis.

Secondly, to provide a wig and breast prosthesis service for cancer and alopecia patients who require Wigs and/or Breast Prosthesis and mastectomy bra fitting. You will have you own out-patient clinics and be responsible for assessing and supplying breast prosthesis and/or mastectomy bras and for supplying and fitting patients with acrylic wigs.

To ensure that the highest standard of care is given to patients and their carers.

To prepare Orthotic clinics, book and send out appointments, have telephone and face to face contact with Orthotic patients and liaise with visiting Orthotists and any other health care professionals involved in the care of our patients.

To enter and retrieve computer data.

Ensure effective communication with patients, their carers, consultants, GP’s and all levels of NHS Staff, contracted Service providers and external suppliers.

To provide cover for periods of staff absence within the Orthotic Department, and to attend all internal and external training and courses associated with Breast prosthesis fitting, wig fitting & Orthotics.

To check delivery of goods, identifying any discrepancies and irregularities, and resolve these with suppliers and other parties before clearing the goods for payment.

To maintain all paperwork as necessary in connection with the clinics.

To collect any statutory charges, giving receipts and banking money according to the Trust’s financial instructions.

To order supplies and assist in the stock control.

To handle telephone calls and deal with patients’ queries and problems.

To uphold all Trust policies and procedures, including patient confidentiality and Health and Safety - any defects must be brought to the attention of the Manager.

To undertake any other duties as requested by the Orthotic Co-ordinator or Trust.

You are required to comply with the Trusts I M & T Security Policy

Assess breast cancer surgery patients immediately post mastectomy/reconstruction for temporary prosthesis/bras. Assess mastectomy patients for the fitting of silicone breast prosthesis and mastectomy bras. Understand the specific patient’s needs and suitability of products and to treat all patients with compassion and sensitivity.

To provide a wig fitting and supply service for cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy and for those patients who have alopecia with compassion, sensitivity and empathy.
