This is an exciting opportunity to join the Department for International Trade (DIT) as Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) to provide independent advice to the Secretary of State, Ministers, the Permanent Secretary, and other senior officials, ensuring the department’s strategic direction, policy making, and operational decisions are informed by the best available science and engineering evidence.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) helps businesses export, drives inward and outward investment, negotiates market access and trade deals, and champions free trade. Our mission is to increase the standard of living of people across this country and globally, through trade, investment and exports. This is an exciting role which crosses the whole of DIT’s work at a time when the importance of scientific and technical evidence and advice is at the forefront. You will play an essential role as part of the top team in DIT providing independent advice and challenge and ensuring that the Secretary of State and Ministers have access to expert advice.

Job description
The Chief Scientific Adviser will:
Provide expert science and engineering advice and leadership
- Provide independent advice and challenge directly to the Secretary of State, other ministers, and policymakers in the department.
- Contribute personal scientific expertise to appropriate projects and topics across the Department work which spans DIT’s Outcome Delivery portfolio and business functions
- Ensure the Department’s perspective on science and engineering is based in the commercial world, and helps achieve the Department’s trade-oriented goals
- Ensure that the scientific and technical aspects of international trade negotiations are understood and based on the very best in scientific and technical expertise.
- Use their detailed knowledge of the role of science and engineering in the UK’s international trade offer to contribute to promoting British trade across the world with a focus on export and investment delivery.

Promote a scientific and evidence-driven approach to decision-making
- Provide a challenge function to the Department’s use of science and analysis and contribute to wider discussions on policy and delivery, drawing on their own professional and commercial expertise.
- Provide scientific advice for policy, appreciating and promoting the importance of scientific advice and evidence in policy making and helping to develop systems that promote its use
- Support DIT’s horizon-scanning capability, anticipating and advising on strategic risks and opportunities for Departmental policy.
- Champion a systems thinking approach to tackling highly complex problems which require multi-disciplinary and multi organisational responses

Build Scientific capability
- Engage with external stakeholders on key issues and becoming actively involved with other bodies domestically and internationally as required.
- Work with CSAs in other departments to share good practice across government and to identify and resolve cross-departmental science issues.
- Work with the Chief Economist and other analytical disciplines to build DIT’s evidence base and access to expertise
- Lead the departmental Government Science and Engineering (GSE) Profession to build the department’s science and engineering community, capability and awareness.

**Responsibilities**:
Essential Criteria
- Strong industry/commercial expertise alongside international experience within a science and technology context;
- An in-depth understanding of the links between science, engineering and economic growth, coupled with hands-on experience of making those links, ideally in an industry setting;
- Ability to communicate complex scientific advice, including the implications of inherently uncertain risks, simply, clearly and persuasively in writing and verbally to officials, Ministers and/or the public;
- An ability to access and leverage high-quality expertise, and to communicate effectively across a broad range of scientific fields;
- Demonstrable track record of influencing a diverse range of audiences and senior stakeholders and the ability to be effective in a sensitive, political environment open to public scrutiny;
- The capacity to deliver across a range of responsibilities from advising and supporting detailed, internal policymaking through to representing the department externally;
- Excellent interpersonal, networking, and verbal and written communication skills. Ability to be an effective advocate and ambassador within and outside of government;

- Experience of working in a multinational context for a global business;
- An understanding of science and technology within policy areas most relevant to the Department;
- Experience of the policy-making process and a solid understanding of how government departments operate.
