Oxford, United Kingdom Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

This post will work within a team of consultant medical and scientist colleagues to provide a comprehensive Clinical Biochemistry service to the Oxford University Hospitals. The consultant will provide expert support for the diagnosis and management of biochemical clinical problems, advise on appropriate investigations for individual patients and help to determine the repertoire provided by the Clinical Biochemistry Department. The consultant will take a lead role in clinical liaison. The consultant will also take a lead clinical role in the OUH Point-of-Care Testing Advisory Committee (PoCTAC).

The Department of Clinical Biochemistry supports clinical outpatient services in lipid disorders,

diabetes, metabolic bone disease, nutrition and inherited metabolic disorders. The particular areas of laboratory responsibilities and the clinical areas for which the appointee will have direct clinical responsibility will be agreed with him/her, taking into account his/her particular interests and the needs of the Department. The post-holder will be expected to attend the weekly clinical meetings and the weekly laboratory management meetings, and to participate in multidisciplinary meetings with other clinical departments as appropriate.

The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

Our values, standards and behaviours define the quality of clinical care we offer and the professional relationships we make with our patients, colleagues and the wider community. We call this Delivering Compassionate Excellence and its focus is on our values of compassion, respect, learning, delivery, improvement and excellence. These values put patients at the heart of what we do and underpin the quality healthcare we would like for ourselves or a member of our family. Watch how we set out to deliver compassionate excellence via the OUH YouTube channel.

Oxford University Hospitals is the hub of the South 4 Pathology Partnership. Chemical Pathology across the South 4 Pathology Partnership works in collaboration. Support of colleagues and services in the partner trusts will become an increasing component of the post, as an integrated laboratory information management system facilitates closer working across the sites. As a consultant in a specialist centre, the appointee will be expected to work closely with network colleagues to assure the quality of the work of the whole team.

The Chemical Pathology Consultant will have the use of an office at the John Radcliffe site, shared for part of the week with one other Consultant. The office is equipped with the usual furniture and a PC with word processing and spreadsheet facilities, and full access to the laboratory IT systems. There is a shared full-time departmental secretary.

The post holder’s duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospitals, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.
