Head of Offender Healthcare - HMP Birmingham

Are you looking for your next exciting challenge? Are you a compassionate and visible leader keen to lead a service towards quality care delivery? Are you a values-based leader who can engage with staff and service users? If this is you, we want to hear from you.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Operations and working with key partner agencies and commissioners, the post holder will lead the healthcare service at HMP Birmingham and Integrated Offender Health to ensure that prisoners receive the excellent care that meets their diverse needs and achieves the best possible clinical outcome. Our aim is to give prisoners access to health services which are of the same range and quality as those provided by the NHS in the community. Effective healthcare is part of the range of services within the prison designed to help people change their lives and to address or reduce offending behaviour.

Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust works in partnership with Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust who employ primary health care staff based at HMP Birmingham. HMP Birmingham is a Category B Prison which is currently managed directly by HMPPS. Its healthcare facilities include a 15 bedded physical health ward and a 15 bedded mental health ward.

The post holder will be responsible for the leadership, planning and delivery of healthcare services within HMP Birmingham and Integrated Offender Health. In addition you will have strategic relationships with the wider prison environment, HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), Local Delivery Board - Healthcare Partnership and Health & Justice NHSE, Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, local acute hospital trusts, third sectors, etc. As a member of the senior management team, the post holder will contribute to the shaping of the strategic direction for the services and ensure its implementation within defined timescales.

Key to success will be a sound knowledge and experience of operational service issues within a mental health environment, the ability to operate in a complex and changing service; effective partnership working across a diverse community; well-developed communication skills and the ability to lead redesign without compromising service delivery.

Welcome to Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. Our 4000 clinical and support staff help us to improve mental health wellbeing and meet the needs of the 70,000 people we serve each year. We provide a range of mental healthcare services across Birmingham and Solihull, as well as specialised services nationally. We also offer medical, nursing and psychology training and are proud of our international reputation for both research and innovation.

Our population is culturally diverse, characterised in places by high levels of deprivation which create an increasing demand for our services and a necessity for us to make sure everyone can access the help they need. We are a team of compassionate, inclusive and committed people working together to provide excellent care to support our community. If you are looking for a place to belong, where you can make a real difference to people’s lives, join our team where our warm welcome is waiting for you.
