Automotive Technical Specialist

Belfast, United Kingdom Department of International Trade Full time

The UK is a world leader in Future Mobility, from connected and automated vehicles to battery giga-factories and securing the supply chain to delivering the vehicles of tomorrow.

As the Automotive technical expert you will focus on attracting inward investment into the future mobility sector with likely specific focus on electrification supply chain developments. This is central to the Prime Minister’s 10-point plan for a Green Industrial Revolution and there has never been a more exciting time to work in this cutting-edge area. The UK Government is mobilising £12 billion to create and support up to 250,000 highly-skilled green jobs in the UK. Backed by significant government and industry funding, the UK is already a global leader in the key future mobility areas of connectivity and automation, zero-emission propulsion and lightweight materials.

You will work in a fast-paced environment with DIT’s teams across the world, with colleagues from across government, and with public and private stakeholders from across the UK. You will engage across the Auto team with three Grade 7s, two SEOs and two HEOs to deliver work which will include:

- Onshoring inward investment projects in the zero emission vehicles supply chain.
- Building relationships and working closely with the Investment Services Team, colleagues at Post, colleagues across Whitehall and within DIT’s own renewable energy teams.
- You will be expected to take on senior leadership within the directorate, setting examples for a team environment that is inclusive, diverse and open.
- Developing communications and sector capability materials to upskill those in the DIT network to improve their technical understanding.

You will be joining a high performing team working at the epicentre of the UK Government’s delivery of the personal mobility sector of the near future. The Head of Automotive leads the wider Auto team, including the G7s, SEOs and HEOs as well as operations management. These colleagues will lead on projects, while you will provide technical expertise at precise points when needed across all projects. As such you will work closely with the Head of Automotive in order to ensure successful delivery and management of these FDI projects.

Team members are encouraged to seek out opportunities for personal development and training. There will be a need for UK and some overseas travel. The position offers flexibility to meet development needs across the range of behaviours in the Success Profile.

Job description
- Matrix work on projects sitting across the whole team, while engaging closely with the Head of Automotive to ensure successful team delivery.
- Be a technical expert on the Automotive sector, and supply chain management.
- Land/Onshore supply chain companies to build the supply chain network of OEMs as they progress towards EV manufacturing - with particular focus on continuing UK Gigafactory growth.
- Work with the officials in the Investment Services team and at Post in Europe, North America and Asia - as needed - to provide technical expert advice in promoting the UK EV supply chain offer.
- Work with the Office for Investment to ensure government funding is targeted towards the right opportunities for EV development in the UK.
- Identify sector priorities, strengths and areas of focus, with supporting evidence, to outline a pipeline of FDI target opportunities.
- Provide technical expertise to support ministerial advice and briefings to ensure our Ministers are fully informed as well as able to make appropriate decisions regarding electric supply chain manufacturers.
- Promote the strengths and values of the UK electric supply chain industry in achieving the government’s ambitions of decarbonisation and electrification in line with the ten-point plan.

Hybrid working

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.
