Medical Examiner (ME)

The Medical Examiner’s service is hosted by acute trusts (and a small number of specialist trusts) on behalf of NHS England (NHSE).

Following the successful implementation of the Medical Examiner system our Trust is now proceeding with a further round of recruitment across our sites into this very interesting and important role.

The Medical Examiner service scrutinise all in hospital deaths. The success of this programme has been recognised and we are now approaching the next phase, which is the scrutiny of non-acute deaths in the community. In order to progress with this, we are looking for more Medical Examiners to join the team at Southend.

We currently have a Lead Medical Examiner on each site within our Trust supported by the Lead Medical Examiner Officer and a Team of Medical Examiners and Officers.

We would be looking for each Doctor to provide at least 1 session of approximately 4 hours each week, but further sessions are available and can be discussed at interview. There is currently no commitment beyond normal office hours. In order to avoid on call responsibilities, we endeavor to front load staffing at the beginning of the week.

Main duties of the job

Medical Examiners (ME) perform a scrutiny of the records of deceased patients, they discuss the proposed cause of death with the attending team and they explain the cause of death to the bereaved families and ascertain if there are any family concerns. MEs can also help to identify whether a case requires referral to the Coroner’s Office.

You will be supported by the Lead ME and ME Officers. The MEs link in with the bereavement service, Coroners team and Community providers to provide assurance around the cause of death, care patients receive, concerns relatives raise and to support the learning from deaths process.

You will be primarily based at Southend Hospital. Competence with electronic systems is necessary to review records and complete notes. Team working is important, particularly with the wider ME team, Coroners, General Registrars, Legal Services and the Bereavement staff. You should have up to date knowledge of medical practice.

The ME service is hosted by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, who will be your employer. There is not a National ME contract and so the salary will be calculated according to your previous experience and pay scale.
