Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest in the UK. The Russell Centre for Clinical Haematology at the City Campus is a purpose-built, four storey modern building housing a bone marrow transplant and general wards, daycase and outpatient clinic facilities, including an apheresis suite.

This role offers opportunities to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, educational supervision, and research and leadership roles within the specialty.

Main duties of the job

We are recruiting a whole-time substantive Consultant to join our lymphoma team. This is a new post which will support an NHS-England accredited Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-Cell Therapy program beginning in 2023.

The post-holder will be based within Clinical Haematology based at the City campus joining the lymphoma team alongside Professor Christopher Fox, Associate Professor Mark Bishton, Dr Nicolas Martinez-Calle, Dr Emily Chernucha, Dr Andrew McMillan and Dr Juanna Addada. The post holder will also contribute to general Haematology services to the Trust.

The Clinical Haematology department at Nottingham University Hospital is based at the City Campus in the Russell Centre for Clinical Haematology which was opened in 2006. The Department is one of the largest centres for the treatment of clinical haematology in the UK with a specialist interest in the diagnosis and treatment of haematological malignancy and a keen interest in clinical trials and clinical research. The Centre houses all inpatient, outpatient and Day-Case services for Nottingham in a purpose built, state of the art building comprising two wards of 18 and 22 beds including a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit of 18 single rooms with HEPA filtration. The dedicated Outpatient Suite, Day Case (22 stations) and apheresis Unit are housed on the ground floor with haematology offices for medical staff, research staff and secretarial support on the top floor.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

An NHS-England accredited CAR-T program supporting the region (Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Lincolnshire) will begin in 2023. The BMT unit was JACIE re-accredited in 2018 and underwent a successful HTA inspection in 2018 renewing the licensable activities. It is one of the largest units in the UK and in 2019 performed 174 transplants including 68 allogeneic and 96 autologous transplants. There is an active programme of cord blood and haploidentical transplantation. There is also an in-house HTA approved stem cell processing laboratory and apheresis /cell separator unit, as well as a regional ECP service for patients with GvHD.

New emergency admissions are accepted via a dedicated Specialist Receiving Unit (SRU) at the City campus and the new post holder will provide ward round cover for SRU once a week. All Consultants accept out-patient referrals from GPs and the new post holder would be expected to contribute to the provision of GP services to Nottingham including providing formal advice and guidance.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
- Full and specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
- Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
- Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
- FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification
- MRCP or evidence of equivalent qualification

Desirable criteria
- Higher degree in research

Expereince/ clinical skills

Essential criteria
- Substantial experience of managing patients with Lymphoma and evidence of commitment to this sub-speciality area
- Evidence of current/recent experience in haemopoietic stem cell transplantation to meet JACIE standards
- Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals.

Desirable criteria
- Specific training in communication skills
