Phlebotomist

25 hours per week including weekends

Applications are invited from motivated, enthusiastic individuals for the above post. Your duties as a Phlebotomist (taking blood) will be based at Hillingdon Hospital covering wards, outpatients and associated outreach clinics.

Although you will be based at Hillingdon Hospital you may also be required to work at the Mount Vernon site as appropriate dependent on the needs of the service the ability to work a varied shift pattern is essential and this will include occasional bank holidays sessions, or additional weekend duties on both sites.

No formal qualifications are expected as full training will be given, although previous phlebotomy experience or experience in a nursing/caring profession may be an advantage.

A full driving licence and the use of a car to enable travel to outreach locations are essential.

In house training will be provided working towards competencies within phlebotomy.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

1. To take blood samples from patients (phlebotomy) on the hospital wards, outpatients or remote locations as required covering both hospital sites, ensuring that service is of high quality, patient focused, and

1. To identify the samples required for the investigation

1. To be able to explain and re-assure patients and/or their agents on the procedure to be undertaken.

1. To answer any appropriate queries from patients and generally ensure that a considerate and sympathetic approach is maintained in all patient

1. To maintain adequate stocks of consumable items required to perform phlebotomy and to notify appropriate staff when new supplies are

1. To ensure all phlebotomy waste and especially sharp waste is disposed of in accordance with Trust

1. To ensure the correct type of specimen is collected from the patient and that it can be tested within the necessary "time window".

1. To liaise with Phlebotomy supervisor, Medical & Nursing staff on matters related to phlebotomy technique, or when problems in venepuncture / capillary collection are encountered.

1. Liaise with laboratory scientific and support staff on sample requirements, processing and

1. Refer any complaints from patients, patient’s family etc. to senior nurses and/or manager as required.

1. Ensure samples are adequately prepared for transport to the laboratory or other locations, including ensuring receipt of samples requiring special processing or requirements.

1. Undertake and report on (after appropriate training and certification) specific biomedical investigations as directed by biomedical or nursing staff. Namely, procedures associated with Glucose or Lactose tolerance tests, and the measurement of the INR in a near patient environment.
