**The Software Engineer (Research / Machine Learning) role**:
Reporting into the Software Engineering and AI team, the **Software Engineer (Research / Machine Learning)** will join a committed team of engineers involved in projects and collaborations to develop software and utilise AI deep learning techniquesfor the advancement of scientific discovery. Additionally, where possible, to build models and prototypes into tools and services for the shared benefit of science globally and the frontline of patient care.

This is a mid level position with a strong focus on the development of research software and machine learning, and with opportunity to grow and develop alongside an experienced team working across a range of software domains.

**Responsibilities of our Software Engineer (Research / Machine Learning)**:
These include but are not limited to;
- Design and develop high-quality, maintainable software to meet project needs and deadlines (including the interpretation of project requirements and technical specification documents across multiple domains)
- Working with peers and researchers to develop software, analysis methods and solve computational research problems
- Collaborating effectively with internal and external partners, build solid working relationships.
- Peer review and testing - Work closely with colleagues to maintain quality standards and provide code reviews
- Help establish the feasibility of technical proposals - by developing prototypes and experimenting with new technology
- Assist in the planning/scoping of projects - by providing time and resource estimates
- Ensure ease of maintenance and sustainability - by developing, testing, releasing and documenting software using agreed best practices
- Ensure that the technical architecture is well documented and understood - by creating and maintaining technical documentation
- Share knowledge, ideas and their suitability across the team - by staying abreast of developments in the industry.

**Skills and experience we are looking for in our Software Engineer (Research / Machine Learning)**:
You should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: bold, open and collegial, in addition to the following:

- Strong command of Python and related frameworks and libraries (numpy, scikit-image, pandas) for research/analysis projects
- Experience of working with linux command line
- Good understanding of Machine Learning theory and related mathematical principles
- Excellent problem solver
- Evidence of understanding good software engineering practice, version control (GIT/Github), unit testing, documentation and automated release/deployment processes (CI & CD)
- Experience of working to tight deadlines
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships at all levels and the ability to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience
- Degree in Computer Science or equivalent qualifications/experience
