**Job context**

The Wolfson Institute of Population Health harnesses expertise across a wide range of population based research and education activities and aims to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence in population health and preventive medicine. The Institute is organised into five separate research centres which, though complementary and following the Institute strategic plan, also have Centre-specific objectives and requirements.

The post-holder will work in the Centre for Evaluation and Methods (CEM). CEM is a new and thriving research centre that incorporates a number of collaborative units who work closely together to deliver outstanding research based on their combined and complementary research strengths. The Centre comprises of four units, including two UKCRC registered clinical trials units (CTUs): Barts CTU and the Pragmatic CTU; the Methodology Research Unit; and the Health Economics and Policy Research Unit.

The post-holder will be based in the Health Economics and Policy Research Unit which develops empirical and methodological health economics research across disease areas, public health problems and healthcare systems to generate evidence that informs national and international health policy. The group also provides health economics teaching and advice to students and professionals.

**Job purpose**

The post holder will have strong grounding in health economics methodology and will lead and contribute to projects in one or more key disease/policy areas involving initiating research proposals; developing/conducting health economic studies emanating from successful proposals; broader methodological and strategic activities in collaboration with health economists and other researchers; research dissemination; and relevant training activities. Key methodologies include economic evaluation alongside clinical trials, decision analytic modelling and evaluative studies embedded in routine and cohort health data. Key disease areas include cancer, cardiometabolic conditions, mental health, neurology, orthopaedics, respiratory health, surgery, and public health.

**Main duties and responsibilities**

1. Lead and/or contribute significantly to research in the field of health economics, including study design, study implementation, data collection and analyses;
2. Actively engage and work jointly with health economists/clinicians/other professionals on the project to make significant contributions and pursue applied and methodological health research;
3. Manage and monitor research grants, resources and budgets as appropriate.

4. Attend and present progress at regular project team meetings;
5. Disseminate research findings at national and international conferences as well as other formats of dissemination activities to academics, patients and the general public;
6. Develop and contribute to high quality peer-reviewed publications, project reports, and other outputs;
7. Foster collegiality and support the development of junior colleagues and their career development through line management, coaching, mentoring and appraisals as appropriate;
8. Engage with the research community at an appropriate level, e.g., via conferences, advisory or editorial bodies, research funders, referring and research reviews, including advice on study design and more widely as directed by line manager;
10. Contribute to undergraduate/graduate teaching and academic supervision at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry;
11. Contribute to operations of the Unit, Centre, Institute and wider QMUL, as well as wider relevant bodies, such as learned societies;
12. Engage in the broader QMUL agenda (e.g. Equality & Diversity; Sustainability; Internationalisation; Widening Participation; Interdisciplinarity and Staff Development) in line with QMUL strategies and policies;
13. Support and contribute to public engagement initiatives and activities;
14. Participate in the Institute’s outreach plans, developing links with, for example, community partners in the UK and/or overseas.
