The Role

Do you have skills in the analysis of microbes using Mother Machines and optical tweezers? We seek a part time (~1 day a week) post-doctoral research associate to help with a series of very exciting experiments to investigate what does, or does not, control selective gradients in bacteria.

This is part of a BBSRC Pioneer Research Project for novel high risk high pay-off research. We only have a years funding so we need to hit the ground running so you must have extensive first-hand experience of the microfluidics techniques we propose using.

Key Accountabilities
To conduct and rigorously document experiments on microbial growth and mutation rates using microfluidics tools
To operate laser tweezers.
To culture bacteria for the experiments
To assess and document risks in line with Newcastle University policies
To prepare organisms for sequencing
To prepare manuscripts for publication to a very high standard
To present their research at national and international conferences
To effectively and courteously interact with team members and other colleagues.
To contribute to an effective research culture

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Experience of using Mother Machines in microfluidics analyses of microbial populations, including the recording of images.
Knowledge of the culture and storage of bacterial cultures
Rigorous record keeping
The preparation of manuscripts

Attributes and Behaviour
Rigorous planning and execution.
To be able to finish things.
Conscientious and ethical attitude to research
An enthusiastic interest in research
The willingness to discuss and disagree with the research team
Some flexibility in hours (in day time) to accommodate the research programme

**Qualifications**:
A Master's degree in Environmental Engineering
