**The Post**
The post holder will form part of the Mental Health, Wellbeing and Counselling Team, based in Student Support Services, which provides a range of professional advisory and support services to current and prospective students. They will report to the Mental Health Advisers, who in return reports to the Head of Student Guidance and Wellbeing

The successful applicant will sensitively and professionally support students who, for reasons associated with a mental health condition, may need help with their academic studies or university experience, or are showing signs of distress. They will maintain confidentiality and build trust with their students. There may be times where there will be a requirement to give support, guidance or pastoral care on commonly occurring welfare issues or queries, occasionally where standard procedures do not always exist, judging when to listen, when to give advice or guidance and when to refer the individual for professional help. The post holder will also:

- Be aware and maintain knowledge of internal, external and online support networks and resources for both themselves and the individual
- Refer students to other internal support services as appropriate e.g. student learning services, counselling
- Provide specialist mental health mentoring support to students from a wide range of backgrounds, ages, levels of study, abilities, cultures, nationalities and ethnicities, those who are LGBT+ and those who have diverse needs
- Respect diversity and actively promote equality and inclusion
- Work with Student Services colleagues to ensure a high quality specialist mental health mentoring support service for students
- Ensure own health and well-being in all working arrangements with students. Operate within service protocols for confidentiality, data sharing, escalation and record keeping

**Description of Duties** Communication**
- Will adhere to policy and procedure regarding confidentiality and GDPR.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with staff and students throughout the university
- Respond promptly to routine enquiries
- Communicate effectively to enhance the student experience, taking account of individual preferences and needs
- Engage with wider Student Support Services team

**Teamwork and Motivation**
- Be sufficiently self-motivated in order to undertake allocated duties within given time frames, with the capability to work for periods without supervision
- Work effectively with the Mental Health Advisers and other members of the Mental Health, Wellbeing and Counselling team to provide effective and high-quality mental health mentoring support
- Contribute effectively as part of the wider Student Services team

**Escalation and Decision Making**
- Contribute effectively to decision making within the Mental Health, Wellbeing and Counselling Team
- Provide appropriate emotional support to each student, assessing and observing at each contact session, and escalating any issues of concern to the Mental Health Advisers
- Recognise students who are at risk of personal or academic crisis and respond appropriately in an emergency situation in line with established service protocols

**Initiative and Problem Solving**
- Solve standard day to day problems as they arise, following guidelines or established procedures and recognising when a problem should be referred to a more senior or more appropriate person
- Use initiative and creativity to resolve problems where the optimal solution may not be immediately apparent but has to be assessed by a process of reasoning, weighing up the pros and cons of different approaches, identifying and assessing practical options and breaking the problem down into component parts.
- Employ initiative and problem-solving skills in the provision of mental health mentoring support to students.
- Identify the particular areas of the student experience that are implicated in relation to each student’s mental health diagnosis and provide support that will assist engagement that is positive.

**Emotional Demands**
- Be perceptive to the various levels of student need. Undertake regular supervision with the Mental Health Advisers.

**Work Environments**
- Recognise that the work environment may involve working outside normal working hours and may involve remote/online working.
- Provide mental health mentoring in a confidential environment.

**Knowledge and Experience**
- Develop and maintain knowledge and expertise in relation to specialist mental health mentoring support.
