Cambridge, United Kingdom Wellcome Sanger Institute Full time

Do you want to help us improve human health and understand life on Earth? Make your mark by shaping the future to enable or deliver life-changing science to solve some of humanity's greatest challenges.

**About the Role**:
We are seeking two highly motivated and skilled Senior Computational Biologists/Computational Biologists (dependent upon skills and experience) to join Teichmann lab at the Wellcome Sanger Institute for a 2 year fixed term contract. The Teichmann lab is a world leader in the international Human Cell Atlas initiative to systematically map all cells in the body and across the lifespan. We make use of state-of-the-art single cell technologies, including large-scale cross-tissue HCA datasets, multi-modal single cell genomics (e.g. transcriptomics and chromatin accessibility) and spatial genomics (e.g. 10x Visium, FISH) technologies. We provide a multifaceted computing infrastructure including a powerful LSF cluster, GPU access, an OpenStack cloud architecture, and easy access to interactive notebooks for convenient day-to-day data analysis.

**About Us**:
The Teichmann lab uses cutting edge single cell genomics technologies and computational methods to understand genes, proteins and cells in human health and disease. We have a long-standing interest in understanding global principles of gene regulation, protein interactions and have a particular interest in immunity. We are focused on using single-cell approaches, cell atlas technologies, and understanding human genetics at the cellular level. The team combines innovative techniques in wet and dry labs and applies these methodologies for further understanding of human health, development and disease.

**Key responsibilities of the role**:

- You will support (Computational Biologist) or drive (Senior Computational biologist) bioinformatics analysis and interpretation of large-scale multi-modal genomics data.
- Use existing computational approaches and develop own methods to analyse and interpret data, to understand cell type and tissue function.
- Suggest validation strategies to confirm hypotheses and predictions.
- Contribute to development of innovative data mining strategies and single cell data analysis and integration pipelines.

**About you**:
Working as part of a collaborative team you will support (computational biologist)/ lead (senior computational biologist) on the formulation and pursuit of basic science and/or translational science questions based on large single cell data sets generated from a range of different tissues. You will curate, manage and perform high quality data analysis of genomics data to answer specific questions in gene regulation and tissue function in health and disease in collaboration with computational and wet lab scientists. In addition to strong communication skills, you will be highly creative, flexible and organised with a logical and diligent approach to information gathering.

**Essential Skills**:

- MSc or equivalent experience in relevant quantitative discipline (e.g. Computational Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Physics, Engineering or Applied Statistics/Mathematics)
- Understanding and experience in the fields of genomics, sequencing data processing and analysis
- Experience programming in high level scripting languages (preferably python), and Unix/Linux
- Strong communication skills to allow efficient interactions with team members and collaborators
- Ability to organise own workload and manage competing priorities
- Ability to summarise complex information and present to a wide variety of audiences in a concise and logical manner
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external teams at all levels
- Ability to acquire technical skills when required to achieve project goals
- Good attention to detail and record keeping for sample and analysis tracking

**Additional skills for Senior Computational Biologist**:

- PhD/MSc or equivalent experience in relevant quantitative discipline (e.g. Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Physics, Engineering or Applied Statistics/Mathematics)
- Proven understanding and experience in the fields of genomics, sequencing data processing and analysis
- Highly developed problem-solving skills, demonstrating initiative, creativity, and flexibility

**Other Information**:
**Salary per annum**

**Computational Biologist: £35,849-£42,589**

**Senior Computational Biologist: £43,597-£51,848**

**Application Process**:
Applications will be considered on an ongoing basis and the role may close early when a successful appointment has been made.

**Closing Date: 1st May 2023**

**Working at Wellcome Sanger**:
Our flexible-hybrid working environment is designed to support a healthy work-life balance. This means you can work flexibly with a combination of working from home, and working from our Campus to allow you to focus on being productive and part of the team while enjoying the benefits of working flexibly.

We aim to attract, recruit, retain and develop talent from the widest possible talent pool, thereby gaining insight and access to different markets to generate a greater impact on the world. We have a supportive culture with the following staff networks, LGBTQ+, Parents and Carers and Race Equity to bring people together to share experiences, offer specific support and development opportunities and raise awareness. The networks are also a place for allies to provide support to others.

We want our people to be whoever they want to be because we believe people who bring their best selves to work, do their best work. That's why we're committed to creating a truly inclusive culture at Sanger Institute. We will consider all individuals without discrimination and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees, where everyone can thrive.

**Our Benefits**:
We are proud to deliver an awarding campus-wide employee wellbeing strategy and programme. The importance of good health and adopting a healthier lifestyle and the commitment to reduce work-related stress is strongly acknowledged and recognised at Sanger Institute.
