The Department for Education (DfE) is responsible for children’s services and education, including higher and further education policy, apprenticeships, and wider skills in England. The Department’s Operations and Infrastructure Group is committed to working closely and collaboratively across its various teams to ensure effective delivery of collective priorities.

**Financial Operations Division**

Provides a professional standing data, payments and recoveries shared service to the Department, it’s Executive Agencies: the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA); Teacher Regulation Agency (TRA); and the Standards and Testing Agency (STA), and several other Arm’s Length Bodies (ALBs)
- It makes secure, accurate and timely payments in excess of £100bn each year to academies, colleges, local authorities, charitable and commercial providers of education and training in addition to commercial suppliers (e.g. construction firms and IT suppliers)
- Is responsible for the cash management of payment commitments and provides a full banking service for the entities above
- Is responsible for the operation of efficient debt management and cash management and forecasting processes
- Is responsible for ensuring account information held on the contract & payment systems has been validated and verified
- Maintains and preserves financial data quality.
- Operates processes and systems consistently and diligently to ensure compliance with procedures to protect public funds from loss due to error and/or fraud
- Ensures that the Department’s Financial Data processes are adhered to, abiding by the governance structure for access to systems, month-end activities and departmental payment continuity plan
- Provides support to Financial System users to undertake critical activities.

**Job description**:
**Accounts Payable Officer; Accounts Payable Team**

A role in the Financial Operations division will involve working collaboratively and flexibly across all its areas, with the opportunity to gain experience in:

- Processing supplier invoices and grant transactions in finance systems
- Performing payment reconciliations on a daily basis and ensuring the necessary control and validation checks are complete
- Managing shared mailboxes and resolving queries with excellent customer service (with both internal and external customers)
- Providing support to the Department’s finance system users
- Assisting in the prompt recovery of outstanding debts and receivables.

**Person specification**:
We are looking for somebody who can display the following **es**sential cr**iteria**:

- Experience of working in a finance environment and/or with finance processes
- Experience of building and maintaining relationships with a range of stakeholders (including senior stakeholders)
- Evidence of working effectively in a team and also taking individual initiative and proactiveness
- Experience of actively driving continuous improvements in processes
- Ability to work to tight deadlines under pressure and manage competing priorities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong numerical and analytical skills, including experience in analysing data using Microsoft Excel
- Strong attention-to-detail

**Desirable criteria**:

- Experience of working in a finance environment and/or with finance processes
- A working knowledge of Microsoft Business Central would be desirable, but **not essential**, as full training will be given.

Desirable criteria will only be assessed in the event of a tie break situation to make an informed decision.
