**About Natural England**

Do you have a passion for nature and the environment? Do you want to make a real difference and secure significant environmental gains in the present and the future? Do you enjoy working in a team? Can you see yourself advising communities and customers to maximise gains for the Natural Environment?

If this appeals to you, a career at Natural England offers rewarding opportunities to secure environmental improvements and play your part in creating a better future for people and nature.

The priority work Natural England is delivering includes:

- Establishing a Nature Recovery Network to help wildlife thrive
- Monitoring environmental changes to identify and help reduce the effects of climate change
- Working with farmers and landowners to develop greener food production methods
- Advising on plans for new developments to maximise gains for nature
- Providing ways for people to better connect with nature, including green social prescribing

We are the Government’s advisor for the natural environment, playing a vital role in delivering the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, an ambitious vision which brings new opportunities to protect and enhance and to achieve real outcomes for the environment.

**Job introduction**

Our soils are complex living components of terrestrial ecosystems and play an essential role in delivering many functions that enable life on land. How we manage our soils has a huge impact on their ability to function.

Managed well, our soils deliver functions that can support all aspects of our land’s natural capital, and provide greater resilience to the threats of environmental change. Good management can enable soils to grow food sustainably, absorb flood water, store carbon, or support diverse wildlife above and below ground. Managed badly, however, our soils can contribute to flooding, pollution, disease, food insecurity and biodiversity loss and worsen climate change. It has never been more important to encourage good management of soils.

The government’s commitment to have all soils sustainably managed by 2030 requires strong, coherent evidence-based advice and guidance for farmers and other land managers on how best to manage the wide variety of soils, to deliver a wide range of outcomes. Natural England plays a key role synthesising and communicating science, to provide robust clear guidance on soil management, as well as developing the evidence base through independent, commissioned and collaborative research.

As well as supporting current policy and delivery, Natural England also plays a role in identifying and exploring emerging soils issues, and in integrating soil management with the ecological principles that govern our wider approach to conserving, enhancing, and promoting engagement with the natural environment. To this end, we seek to encourage awareness and recognition of the roles of soils among our staff, and among our partners, stakeholders and the general public.

We are looking for an expert in soils and land management, to join our team of soils specialists, to help guide and shape the way soils are managed in England.

**The Team**

**Job description**

This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Specialist in Soils to join our expanding team, working at both strategic and applied level to develop the agenda and deliver evidence-based training and guidance on managing soils.

The role involves reviewing evidence and providing expert, evidence-based and practical advice across Natural England and within the Defra Group and other partners, with an initial focus the development of Environmental Land Management (ELMS) soils options, approaches and guidance.

Key current evidence issues include: understanding the techniques and approaches required to improve soil health in degraded soils, with a focus on the impact of soil type, past management history, organic matter status, and relative benefits of, and interactions between physical, biological and chemical management practice; and exploring the impacts of organic matter quality to soil carbon storage and soil health, following on from current research into requirements for minimum organic matter additions to soils. Another key area to progress is the development of coherent, evidence-based land management tools and systems, usi
