The lead midwife for fetal monitoring, alongside the obstetric lead, will be responsible for developing and implementing a programme of education, a competency assessment and a culture of on-going risk assessment and support, in relation to fetal well being assessment and clinical management in pregnancy, labour and birth. The post holder will provide expertise to the service and support the implementation of national policy and national guidance/ evidence in relation to fetal monitoring.

As a lead midwife for fetal monitoring, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective service supporting managers and colleagues to meet the objectives of SVBLv3, Ockenden IEAs, Maternity Incentive scheme and Maternity and Neonatal three-year plan, to deliver the local transformation plan to achieve better outcomes for women and babies.

Blackpool Teaching Hospital requires an innovative and enthusiastic Fetal monitoring lead midwife.

Lead and facilitate a programme of education and support for clinicians responsible for fetal assessment, which will increase their knowledge and competence in the interpretation of cardiotocography and intermittent auscultation in line with the core competency framework v2. This will include antenatal CTG interpretation, the use of computerised CTG as well as intrapartum fetal monitoring.

Support staff in clinical practice to consolidate clinical skills relating to fetal heart rate monitoring and supporting staff in their management/decision making of fetal heart rate monitoring in all clinical areas.

Be a visible and proactive leader in the clinical area

JOB ROLE

Lead and facilitate a programme of education and support for clinicians responsible for fetal assessment, which will increase their knowledge and competence in the interpretation of cardiotocography and intermittent auscultation in line with the core competency framework v2. This will include antenatal CTG interpretation, the use of computerised CTGs as well as intrapartum fetal monitoring.

Ensure that all midwives and obstetricians providing antenatal and intrapartum care undertake the Trust approved Cardiotocograph (CTG) and Intermittent Auscultation (AIA) competency assessment within the required time frame.

Provide enhanced teaching and additional support to staff who need to repeat the competency test to achieve and demonstrate the expected levels of knowledge, or who are identified as requiring further support through the risk management process.

Maintain the electronic database to evidence attendance registers and ensure compliance to the mandatory requirement for midwives and obstetric staff in collaboration with the practice development midwife and to provide a monthly report on this compliance data.

Work within the Local Maternity Neonatal System (LMNS) to act as a conduit for information sharing between the Trust and the region.

Ensure that interpretation of fetal assessment is undertaken with a structured approach, reflective of recommendations within our current guidelines and that all documentation reflects this approach.

Be visible and proactive on Delivery Suite, Birth Centre and in antenatal areas to initiate and/or lead discussion regarding fetal assessment, embed and promote the ‘Fresh Eyes’ approach with associated documentation.

Support staff in clinical practice to consolidate clinical skills relating to fetal heart rate monitoring and supporting staff in their management/decision making of fetal heart rate monitoring in all clinical areas.

Assist in the implementation, teaching and auditing of the use of computerised CTG (Dawes Redman). Participate and lead in weekly CTG teaching in the maternity unit.

To develop in conjunction with the midwifery team leaders, an Audit form to be used for daily reviews for all emergency deliveries in the previous 24 hours focusing on CTG interpretation and subsequent management of care. Use findings for case reviews and for reflective practice sessions, to cascade and evidence learning from good practice and identify areas for further development.
