Oncoplastic Fellow in Breast Surgery
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is excited to advertise an Oncoplastic Fellow Post to join the Breast Surgery team. The post is based at Burnley General Teaching Hospital and there may be a requirement to also work occasionally at the Royal Blackburn Hospital. Both are well-equipped modern hospitals with excellent facilities.
The individual appointed to this post will join the Trust’s highly motivated multidisciplinary team, led by 5 Consultant Breast Surgeons, in addressing the challenging demands of the speciality. The Unit treats 460 breast cancers each year (50% screen detected) in the dedicated breast unit facilities (opened December 2017), housed adjacent to the breast screening unit. Each of the consultants have additional roles with 3 being Associate Medical Directors in the Trust and can provide opportunities for development in Clinical Education, Clinical Research, Governance, Service & Workforce transformation.
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust was formed in 2003 from the merger of Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley NHS Trust and the Burnley Hospitals NHS Trust. East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust provides a caring service to a population of over 650000. Across all sites the trust has 1041 beds. Recently both Blackburn and Burnley sites have been recognised as teaching hospitals in association with University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). Along with UCLan medical students, ELHT also offers placements to medical students from Lancaster and University of West Indies.
Services are provided from two main sites, the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital. In 2006 a service reconfiguration, ‘Meeting Patients Needs’ was implemented which resulted in the Blackburn site becoming the centre for all acute services in East Lancashire. The Emergency Department (ED) at Blackburn is the only ED for East Lancashire and is a Trauma Unit in the Lancashire Trauma network with the Trauma Centre based at the Royal Preston Hospital. The ED is supported by Urgent Care Centre at Blackburn and Burnley and a Minor Injuries Unit at Accrington.
The position will have elements of service provision alongside addressing individual learning needs through clinical activities such as one-stop new referral clinics, follow-up clinics, oncoplastic clinics, MDT, oncoplastic MDT and theatre lists. The unit offers entire range of partial and complete breast reconstruction including complex therapeutic mammoplaties, local adipocutaneous flap reconstruction, implant based reconstruction, autologous LD reconstructions, lipomodelling, symmetrisation surgery, nipple reconstructions and tattooing. Autologous microvascular reconstructions are performed as joint procedures with colleague plastic surgeons at nearby units. You will also be expected to build on your leadership skills and be involved in clinical education and quality improvement within the breast unit.
