The Town Council is the first tier of local government, looking after the picturesque market town of Henley-on-Thames and providing a wide range of quality services including parks, recreation grounds, sports and arts facilities, allotments, cemetery, moorings, car parks, community buildings and visitor information. We are an ambitious town council and current projects include a new bus service; a project to create a new sports pavilion, pitches and parks depot; plans for an adventure golf course; tackling the climate emergency; and supporting businesses and tourism as they recover from the COVID-19 crisis.

**Vacancy description**

**Duties and responsibilities**
- Provide a friendly and helpful presence at Mill Meadows to assist visitors
- Create and maintain grassed areas, including verges
- Inspect, clean and maintain playground equipment
- Create and maintain new flower beds and borders
- Carry out weedkilling, and snow and leaf clearance
- Litter picking and litter bin emptying
- Tree pruning and hedge trimming
- Assisting with maintenance of cemetery and allotments
- Installing and maintaining street furniture such as signs, bins and benches
- Assisting with maintaining the Council’s buildings
- Issue excess charge notices for overstaying cars
- Operating and maintaining parks vehicles

**Working week**

37 hours average per week with seasonal variation, worked between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Includes some weekend shifts.

- Interest in horticulture, grounds maintenance, or a related field
- Able to work weekends and public holidays (on rota)
- Physically capable to carry out the jobs listed
- A good team player
- Able to work under own initiative
- Well-presented
- Demonstrates keen attention to detail
- Desirable (training given)
- Full, clean UK driving licence
- Knowledge of or interest in conservation and biodiversity
- Previous experience in land-based industry

**Personal qualities**

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual, who is keen to learn and expand their knowledge in horticulture.

**Desired Qualifications**

4/C or above in GCSE Maths & English.

**Future prospects**

Potential to become a full-time permanent member of staff on completing the apprenticeship.

**Things to consider**

This is a physical role and will involve working in all weather conditions.

**Training to be provided**
- Weekly day release into BCA College
- Level 2 Horticulture Operative Diploma
- Level 2 Functional Skills Maths & English unless exempt
- Pa 1 theory as part of BCA Learning, Employer will provide PA6 training during the apprenticeship
- First Aid course
- End point assessment at the end of programme

**Job Types**: Full-time, Apprenticeship

**Salary**: £300.00 per week
