Culham, United Kingdom Culham Centre for Fusion Energy Full time

**Overview of Responsibilities**:
We offer excellent opportunities for motivated and enthusiastic undergraduate students studying at UK Universities to join our 8-12-week summer placement scheme. The scheme is designed for students entering their penultimate or final year of studies, with potential opportunities post-graduation.

Our scheme gives you a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of one of the most advanced sources of sustainable and clean energy. During your summer programme, you will experience a broad range of diverse tasks, work on real projects, and gain invaluable experience within the fusion energy sector. UKAEA offers a nurturing and supportive community for you to gain some valuable work experience in a fascinating and rapidly evolving industry.

UKAEA is committed to supporting all members of our community, especially with respect to mental health awareness and promoting well-being. Our qualified Mental Health First Aiders are trained to provide guidance and ensure the highest levels of confidentiality.

We need you to help us develop the ultimate source of electricity

Placement Opportunity:

- Start Date: Monday 3rd June 2024
- Location: UKAEA’s Culham site
- Hybrid Working: Hybrid placement
- Placement Title: Density functional theory modelling of precipitate interfaces in ARAFM steels
- Overview: Numerous new alloys have been developed as part of the UKAEA NEURONE programme, an ambitious undertaking to develop a new high-temperature fusion-grade steel in the next five years. Vanadium nitride (VN), tantalum carbide (TaC) and titanium carbide (TiC) are the principal nanoprecipitates which are designed to enhance creep performance and help to trap irradiation-induced damage in these steels. Understanding the behaviour of precipitate interfaces under neutron irradiation within these steels is crucial to understanding and unlocking optimal material properties. The student will model interfaces between VN, TaC and TiC precipitates with the Fe matrix and derive the interfacial energies in each case. This may also include modelling surface interaction with neutron damage, and if time allows, initial studies of neutron interaction at the interface will be conducted. This work will link with an existing collaboration with Imperial College London, enabling regular discussion with experts both at ICL and UKAEA.
