We have an opportunity for a Senior Train Service Controller to join our Control team, with the objective to ensure all Northern service are resourced and delivered to the highest of standards.

As the Senior Train Service Controller, you’ll supporting the Duty Control Manager, by leading the Control team, where you’ll work with real-time management of Northerns services and disruptions.

In this quick thinking and responsive role, you’ll ensure you and the Control team respond to disruptions efficiently. You’ll coordinate and support the team to make sure all Northern services are resourced and delivered to provide a safe, high quality, punctual and reliable train service for Northern’s customers and Stakeholders.

Based at our York Rail Operating Centre, you’ll take the lead to liaise and negotiate with Network Rail and other industry Partners to find ways to minimise disruption and maximise service delivery to our customers. You’ll lead by example when implementing pre-planned and ad-hoc contingency plans, you’ll minimise the effect of shortages or disruption. As well as steering the Control team to direct and challenge the real-time performance investigation process.

In this robust role, you’ll be the front runner for performance in the team; leading by example to deliver an excellent service to all. With a team of 12 in total, you’ll manage up to 9 people on a daily basis. This role requires you to work 42-hours, working week on average, over a 7-day week. Working days and nights, you and your team will provide 24-hour cover for all Northern services.

**Role Responsibilities**

In this role your main duties will be:

- Ensure the highest levels of safety are always maintained for Northern services, customers, and employees.
- Take the lead for the real time management of Northern Rail services, achieving the effective use of Traincrew resource and rolling stock to deliver services to performance and quality specs.
- Leading a team of Controllers on shift; and provide support to the Duty Control Manager
- Negotiate with Network Rail Controls for pathing of Northern Rail services in times of disruption and agreeing track access.
- Lead & challenge the real-time performance investigation process; provide evidence through the monitoring of all Northern Rail services, ensuring service disruption is reported as necessary to all affected staff.
- Lead the Control team to manage the Northern Rail DMU & EMU fleet in real-time; allocate units to diagrams to covering Northern Rail services with the diagrammed/programmed class; considering fuelling, servicing, and other maintenance requirements, and ensure units are presented for maintenance in accordance with requirements. Guaranteeing the status and location of the above unit fleet is accurately reflected in relevant IT systems.
- Ensure unit casualties and defects are reported to the Engineering Department representative within Control.
- Awareness and implement the Northern Rail alternative transport policy and regulations as required.
- Input entries as required into the Northern Control Log.
- Provide training and mentoring as required.
- Produce and deliver projects as necessary.

- Extensive knowledge of the Passenger Information During Disruption initiative
- Sound knowledge of the working railway, with particular emphasis on passenger train operations and incident management
- A strong understanding of customers’ needs, excellence in Customer Service, and an understanding of the issues faced by front line staff
- A sound knowledge of Rules, Regulations and Safety Instructions relating to the operation of passenger trains using both diesel and electrical multiple units
- A knowledge of the Performance and Service Quality Regimes
- Good IT skills with experience of railway industry mainframe and micro systems
- A good knowledge of train crew conditions of service and the rostering process
