- Job description- You will join the Hydrometry & Telemetry Team (H&T) responsible for the management of environmental field-telemetry equipment and hydrometric data collection, ensuring accurate and timely data and interpretation is provided to our customers. The role is a combination of field and office work, involving problem solving on the network of sites, and managing the data.
Working across Cumbria on the hydrometric network of water quantity sites -rainfall, river flow/level and groundwater monitoring sites - you will gather, quality assure and provide scientific data to internal and external customers. Some fieldwork is required, as is working in and near water in at sometimes remote locations that you will need to drive to. You will work both in a team of officers and alone, so must be enthusiastically self-motivated and a team player.
You will lead and be supported by our fieldwork Grade 3s, to the best outcome for each site. Elements of asset management, public safety and delivery of national project upgrades are all current considerations of H&T delivery.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. There will be a requirement to participate in the Incident Management telemetry standby rota (this attracts additional payment and full training is provided).
The Environment Agency is committed to supporting staff learning and development and Health, Safety & Wellbeing, through courses and experiences. The organisation will be Carbon Net Zero by 2030. The H&T Team have a part to play with low carbon solutions to operating the network.
The role will consist of a split of office, home based, depot and fieldwork. You will need to live within the county to effectively do the role and attend sites and meetings. A Lease / Hire / Fleet vehicle is provided for business travel required by the role. Full UK driving licence required.
- The team- The Hydrometry & Telemetry Team is responsible for the operation of the hydrometric network of assets for Cumbria and Lancashire, delivered as two area Teams from main offices at Penrith and Preston.
Our key customers are Flood Coastal Risk Management and Water Resources. DEFRA customers include the Met Office and Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH).
The service delivered underpins the Environment Agency’s statutory responsibilities relating to Flood Forecasting and Water Resources.
- Experience/skills required- Ideally you will have experience in foundation Hydrometry and Telemetry activities and work methods, though this is not essential. Alternatively, having an environmental, scientific, or engineering background and be experienced in data management & validation, and monitoring equipment. The H&T experience would be provided by shadowing and some courses.
Health & Safety is an important requirement of the activities we undertake, so practical fieldwork experience is useful to the role.
You will possess:

- Experience in managing large quantities of data
- Confidence using environmental monitoring equipment and some knowledge of telemetry systems
- Willingness to work outside often in demanding weather conditions, all year round.
- Confidence driving in all weather conditions and to remote locations
- Strong Health & Safety culture
- Environmental knowledge and awareness, ideally of the water cycle
- Well-developed influencing and practical problem-solving skills
- Confidence working in and near water
