A new opportunity for a talented and enthusiastic Head of Strategy to join our Director's Office has arisen.

This is a fixed term contract from September 2023 for one year.

This is an exciting time to join the Institute, the new Director Matt Hurles took up position in May, and the Institute is undergoing a period of change as the wider Wellcome Genome Campus expands.

**About the Role**:

- You will support the Director and Associate Director in developing and delivering organisational and scientific strategy.
- You will co-ordinate and assist in the development, monitoring and management of the scientific and organisational strategy of the Sanger Institute, including developing and leading on Annual Reporting to our core funder Wellcome, and associated internal governance.
- In this period of change, you will have an additional focus on strategy delivery and operationalisation the Institute's revised scientific priorities and vision. This process may influence and alter our strategy during a funding period, and you will be tasked with co-ordinating and communicating such changes and promoting our organisation and strategy to key internal and external stakeholders.
- You will co-ordinate the socialisation of the developed strategy within the Institute, and collaborates with colleagues and key external stakeholders to monitor and measure our success against our strategic objectives. This includes consideration of the wider Genome Campus and local Cambridge ecosystem and strategy specific interactions with Wellcome.
- You will also lead a small team responsible for organisational wide Reporting, Impact Evaluation and Information.

You will be a highly organised, efficient, self-motivated and energetic individual who is able to work independently in a dynamic environment with flexibility, adjusting to varying priorities and finding solutions to challenges that arise.

You will be tactful and discrete in communication and respect confidentiality. You will have the ability to build effective relationships with senior leaders of the Institute and external partners at all levels is essential. Your personal qualities will include professionalism, personal drive, trustworthiness and the ability to work collaboratively.

**Essential Skills**:

- Detailed working knowledge of the principles of project management
- A track record in advising and influencing at senior level, working across an organisation
- Demonstrable record of success in delivering projects through others on time, in budget and to agreed quality standards
- Experience of successfully developing, maintaining and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Experience of writing and presenting scientific information and strategy
- Excellent planning, time management and personal organisational skills
- Ability to work with complexity; to analyse situations and problems, develop and propose solutions, and follow through actions
- Ability to quickly assimilate and communicate relevant scientific and technical details at different levels
- A proactive approach and ability to work on own initiative, with creativity and flexibility
- Excellent drafting skills and demonstrable experience of writing and presenting complex information
- Excellent attention to detail
- Confident and accomplished communicator, oral and written, with experience of successfully influencing and negotiating with people at all levels
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with team and project/programme members
- Extensive skills in Microsoft Office (e.g. MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS Powerpoint and MS Project)

**Other Information**:
Salary in the region of £79,000 to £89,000
