**Principal** Database Administrator**

Wood Mackenzie has an exciting opportunity for a **Principal** Database Administrator** (DBA)** to join a dynamic global business to help drive change and innovation. Join us in shaping the future of Wood Mackenzie and the Global Energy Transition.

**Role Purpose**

The principal responsibility of this role is to provide operational expertise around database management within the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team and work with the software engineering teams for new and existing databases. This encompasses:

- working in partnership with the business and the technology teams, bringing awareness and insight of the different operational constraints / opportunities for projects targeting cloud-based or on-premises databases.
- as a senior member of the team, acts as mentor for the group, constructively challenge service design and implementations, exhibit high degree of autonomy in taking decision over competing priorities, and propose new roadmap items to innovate and improve.
- design, implementation, and maintenance of cloud and on-prem database environments.
- promotion of mutual feedback in cross-functional groups, following database administration best practices.
- a strong focus on service availability and proactive detection of problems.
- ability to articulate technical and business concepts to different audiences and be able to influence technical decisions with solid metrics collection and proof of concepts.

**Responsibilities**:

- Assist the manager of the Data Storage team with setting the strategic direction for our organization’s database architecture, ensuring alignment with overall business goals.
- Lead and oversee major database initiatives, driving innovation and excellence.
- Serve as the highest level of technical escalation for complex database-related issues, providing expert solutions.
- Evaluate and implement database management and deployment technologies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
- Collaborate with executives to align database strategies with overarching business objectives.
- Provide thought leadership in the field of database administration, staying abreast of industry trends, security flaws, and best practices.
- Mentor and guide senior and junior DBAs, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
- Participate in on-call rotation for 24/7 support.
- Participate with cross functional team of principal engineers to plan, investigate, and solve complex problems.

**Qualifications**

**Skill** Requirements**:

- 10+ years’ experience with Database Administration
- BS degree in IT/IS/CS or additional equivalent work experience.
- Proven experience as a Principal Level Database Administrator, with a focus on PostgreSQL/EDB and SQL Server.
- Demonstrated success in setting strategic directions for database architecture aligned with business goals.
- Proven leadership in overseeing major database initiatives, driving innovation and excellence.
- Strong ability to evaluate and implement advanced database technologies.
- Exceptional collaboration skills with executives and cross-functional teams.
- Thought leadership in the field of database administration, staying current with industry trends, security flaws and best practices.
- Proven mentorship and guidance to Senior and Junior DBAs.
- Expert expertise in performance tuning, backup and recovery strategies, and database security.
- Conduct and/or participate in post-mortems for production incidents.
- Expert expertise with infrastructure as code using Terraform / CloudFormation
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
- Work independently as part of a cross-functional, multi-locational team
- Assist with routine system/database maintenance.
- Participate in an on-call support rotation every few weeks.

**Additional Preferred Skills**:

- Mastery of one or more of the following: Azure Postgres, AzureSQL, AWS RDS, AWS Aurora, AWS RedShift, and/or Oracle.
- Mastery in Linux administration (Ubuntu/RHEL).
- Expert in system configuration management too
