Postdoctoral Researcher in Clear-air Turbulence

Reading, United Kingdom University of Reading Full time

Atmospheric turbulence is the leading weather-related cause of aircraft accidents and incidents. Clear-air turbulence, being invisible to the eye and undetectable by the onboard weather radar, is especially hazardous. This project will test the hypothesis that hydrodynamic instability diagnostics may have predictive skill at forecasting clear-air turbulence in an operational context. Around 20% of aircraft encounters with clear-air turbulence are currently unforecastable using conventional diagnostics based on wind shear. Hydrodynamic instability may account for many of these unforecastable encounters. This project will develop and test new nonlocal diagnostics for hydrodynamic instability, with a view to improving operational clear-air turbulence forecasts for the aviation sector, and ultimately making flying smoother, safer, and greener.

You will have:

- strong scientific analytical and computing skills
- experience in analysing, manipulating, and visualising large, complex data sets
- effective communication skills, both verbal and written
