The role
THINK focuses on developing knowledge and practice across four specific inter-related areas of transport and mobility and health and wellbeing:
- the impact of vehicles on air and noise pollution and subsequently the health of the public.
- injuries and deaths stemming from vehicle crashes.
- the impact of active travel (walking and cycling) on health.
- the impact of vehicles on community severance.
The project has been running for a year and has almost 100 organisations and people signed up to the network from different parts of academia, policy and practice. We held an international conference last summer and are currently supporting transport in the community research projects and starting up communities of practice. We’d especially be interested to hear from researchers who have a background or interest in transport and health in relation to air and noise pollution and/or road user safety and someone who has skills in writing summaries from research evidence to the public or key policy and practice-based stakeholders working in transport and health.
Appointments are normally made within 4 - 8 weeks of the closing date.
What you’ll do
The Research Associate will be joining the Psychology Department at Aberystwyth University. Psychology at Aberystwyth is uniquely placed, both physically and logístically, to provide expertise in response to critical and applied areas of research. Founded in 2008, staffing and courses have grown quickly with strategic support from the University and plans to grow the department continue. The current psychology course, accredited by the British Psychological Society, is ranked 2nd in the United Kingdom for student satisfaction (Complete University Guide, 2021). We are developing a new research strategy in the Psychology Department at the Aberystwyth University. We have a draft strategy in place and have new research groups including:
- BioBehavioural Psychology of Affect and Cognition (BBPAC)
- Community Psychology for Health and Sustainability (CHAS)
- HAC (humour and creativity)
- Language, Cognition and Culture
- SocioEnviroBio-psychology of the lifespan
- Psychology of rurality
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- To bring transport and health expertise, enthusiasm and ideas to the project.
- To initiate and develop research development and impact activities, bringing together key stakeholders in transport and health from academia, policy, practice and third sectors and charities
- To coordinate and develop research proposals to submit for funding
- To devise and deliver workshops and collaborative events, along with the Principal Investigator and collaborators.
- Develop outputs including academic journal papers, book chapters and conference papers but also plain English summaries, blogs, and vlogs for transport and health professionals and the general public.
- Support the team running a seminar series and other communication activities with transport and health professionals, academics and the general public.
- Develop, along with the Directors and collaborators, training opportunities for stakeholders in transport and health.
- Support the Project Officer in marketing and communications for the project including helping with the website, social media and delivering an annual conference.
- Support peer review and mentor mini projects with people from practice and policy working closely with researchers from academia.
- Pro-actively contribute to and conduct research, including gather, prepare and analyse data and present results, exhibiting a degree of independence in terms of specifying the focus and direction of that research.
- Prepare reports, draft patents and papers describing the results of the research, both confidential and for publication.
- Contribute to Department organisational matters in order to help it run smoothly and to help raise its external research profile.
- When requested act as a representative or member of committees, using the opportunity to extend their own professional experience.
- Demonstrate and evidence own professional development, identifying development needs with reference to Vitae Researcher Development Framework particularly with regard to probation, performance reviews, and participation in training events.
- Maintain and enhance links with the professional institutions and other related bodies.
