The role

The Department of Law and Criminology at Aberystwyth University is looking to appoint an Associate Lecturer who will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities on our law and criminology schemes. The area of specialisation is open, but we particularly welcome applicants with existing research interests in any of the following: policing; penology; security; criminal law; international criminology and / or terrorism.

**This is an opportunity to be part of an enthusiastic, friendly and dedicated team building the future of a department which was established as Wales’s first Law school and which has grown to include Criminology.**

Appointments are normally made within 4 - 8 weeks of the closing date.

What you’ll do

**Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Role**

In collaboration with other Departmental colleagues and in consultation with external professional bodies where appropriate:
**Teaching and Learning Duties**
- To prepare for and deliver undergraduate, postgraduate and (exceptionally) other taught provision.
- To contribute to the design, planning and delivery of UG provision, in collaboration with colleagues in the Department, the Faculty and other relevant stakeholders and within the parameters of the University’s protocols for teaching, learning and assessment;
- As a member of the teaching team, you will have a Personal Tutor group and will be required to hold formal meetings, some of which will include opportunities to discuss assessment and feedback with a view to ensuring, at all times, on-going learner development;
- To engage with Aberystwyth University’s formal structures for curriculum development in the planning and preparation of new provision and the delivery of excellent teaching and learning undertake all relevant duties which will include:

- Assessing assignments and completing feedback within a tight timescale and in accordance with Departmental and University guidelines with reference to AU’s Assessment and Feedback policy;
- Engage productively with AU IT systems;
- Liaising with External Examiners with respect to specific aspects of the provision and
- Ensure the curriculum reflects the needs of the employability agenda and strategy for the University.

**Scholarship**
- To undertake scholarly activity related to your areas of teaching and other areas of criminal justice as agreed with the Head of Department;
- To engage pro-actively and responsibly with the Departmental and AU research agenda and strategy;
- To understand and engage with the Research Impact agenda; and
- To contribute to the nurturing of a productive research environment within and beyond the Department.

**Other Duties**
- To make a positive and pro-active contribution to marketing and recruitment at UG & PG curriculum level;
- To engage with and contribute to open and visiting days and to participate in schools visits and other recruitment and outreach events;
- To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post;
- To be committed to the University’s Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy, together with an understanding of how it operates within the responsibilities of the post;
- To be committed to your own professional development through the effective use of the University’s Effective Contribution Scheme;
- To complete the PGCTHE qualification or work towards Higher Education Academy accreditation at the appropriate level to complete the requirements of probation;
- To engage as required with relevant AU procedures for HR matters including Effective Contribution System (probation and appraisal); annual leave; sickness absence procedures; workload allocation process; research monitoring; and any other relevant procedure; and
- Contributing to the administrative work of the Department as reasonably requested by your Head of Department or nominee.
- Any other reasonable duties requested commensurate with the grade of this role.
