As the Press and Media Lead your role is to enhance the reputation and build awareness of RCOT and occupational therapy as a profession by generating regular, high-profile media coverage across all four UK nations, nationally and locally in order to buildthe brand and support their mission.

It's an exciting time to join RCOT and the Brand and Marketing team. They're working to transform awareness of occupational therapy across the UK, making sure it's understood, respected and valued and that the vital contributions their members make to ahealthier society are recognised and celebrated. You will be an important part of the Profile and Campaigns team who lead the profile raising activity, engaging with a wide range of external audiences to ensure that occupational therapy is widely known andunderstood, that the value RCOT members deliver to society is recognised and valued and that people know how and where to access it.

**Description**

Develop engaging proactive and reactive media and PR strategies that demonstrate clearly the value of occupational therapy and its impact on society.

Support the dissemination of RCOT campaigns and key messages in response to high level consultations or government reports.

Monitor the news agenda closely and market RCOT's knowledge and expertise into existing news stories and themes.

Develop organisational messages and responses for the media that follow PR best practice.

Plan and deliver the media work relating to integrated campaigns to achieve organisational goals.

Devise and implement media strategies and campaigns by carrying out investigative work, desk research, developing freedom of information requests and commissioning market research to secure newsworthy data.

Deliver a fast and accurate response to media enquiries, including the co-ordination of reasonable out-of-hours requests.

Draft and circulate news releases, press lines, quotes, key messages, statements and briefings for journalists on often complex issues.

Measure the impact of all press, PR and media activity to inform future work and report on progress against strategic objectives.

Develop guidelines for RCOT members on how to engage with the media, in order to maximise the impact of local media opportunities while preserving the reputation of the RCOT.

Develop, nurture and manage relationships with journalists, RCOT stakeholders, colleagues and members.

Oversee the work of freelance PR and media support (such as external photographers).

To organise and manage, where appropriate, media events, including press conferences and photo opportunities.

Work with the Head of Profile and Campaigns and Director of Brand and Marketing to create, and implement as required, a robust crisis communications plan to protect and maintain RCOT's reputation.

**Profile**

Educated to degree level or an equivalent level of work experience.

Recognised PR and/or Communication qualification.

Experience of developing and implementing media strategies and campaigns to raise profile and enhance reputation, and of measuring their impact.

A good understanding of developments in the UK health and social care environment, political awareness and a detailed understanding of what makes news.

Significant experience in a PR/media role interfacing with press, TV and other media.

Experience of working with management teams to identify and interpret key communication issues and objectives.

Experience of budgetary control, compilation of financial data, managing corporate meetings and communication events.

Excellent writing skills with the ability to translate complex information into plain language and tailor writing and messages to audiences and channels.

Experience of dealing with copyright issues and general knowledge of relevant law in this area.

Ability to build relationships and networks in order to achieve the collaboration of all relevant staff /contacts.

Able to undertake desk and commissioned research to support development of media strategies.

Able to produce management information and statistics and present them to a variety of audiences.

Develop briefings, formal and informal training for senior colleagues on how best to present RCOT to the media, in accordance with our spokesperson policy.

Develop policy and guidelines for RCOT colleagues and members on how to engage with the media, to maximise the impact of local media opportunities.
