Applications are invited from motivated, enthusiastic individuals for the above post at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. Your duties as a Phlebotomist will be based at Worthing Hospital covering wards, outpatients and associated clinics. You may also be required to work at Southlands Hospital or St Richards Hospital depending on the needs of the service.

The ability to work a varied shift pattern is required and this will include occasional Bank Holiday sessions or additional weekend duties.

We are looking for Trainee Phlebotomist (Band 2) and Phlebotomist (Band 3) to join our busy Phlebotomy Department at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. The successful applicant will work with a team of Phlebotomists predominantly based at Worthing Hospital. You will be responsible for the day to day Phlebotomy on the wards and outpatient department at Worthing, and in the outpatient department at Southlands. You will be required to work primarily at the Worthing site, but would be expected to spend time at both St Richards and Southlands Hospitals when required.

You should have good attention to detail, manual dexterity, and the ability to follow defined protocols whilst working quickly but effective under pressure, always adhering to all the Trust policies and procedures. Experience/knowledge of venepuncture techniques advantageous, but not expected. All required training will be given to the successful applicant.

The Phlebotomy Team serve an inpatient population of approximately 600 patients on each major Hospital site. Approximately 200 patients per day attend the Pathology Outpatients Department for phlebotomy, and the phlebotomy team are involved in the busy Anti-Coagulation and Haematology clinics. You will be expected to work with other healthcare professionals to ensure a smooth procedure and maintain the standard for high patient satisfaction.

Having received the necessary Phlebotomy training and achieved an appropriate level of competence, to take blood samples from patients, under supervision, which will assist in the provision of routine analysis of specimens within Pathology in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Phlebotomy training manual.

To maintain high standards of safety ensuring the Health & Safety of self, other staff, patients, and visitors to the laboratory.

To ensure that the arrangements for the security of buildings, equipment and chemicals are carried out in accordance with laboratory policy.

To perform phlebotomy ensuring mínimal distress and discomfort to patients always.

To ensure high standards of accuracy when recording, transcribing, and checking patient demographics in particular the labelling of blood tubes.

To communicate any relevant information within the team to ensure the continual and efficient running of the service.

To seek advice from senior staff in response to patient enquiries and offer appropriate guidance strictly according to departmental policies.

To actively participate in team meetings and to inform effectively both verbally and at hand-over.

To communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and carers to obtain consent for venepuncture to take place.
