Your New role

At National Highways, we’re looking for an Environment Specialist to join our team based in Guildford, Maidstone or Basingstoke. As part of this role you will contribute to the development and delivery of projects and maintenance works for the South Eastregion, providing technical expertise on environmental topics and outcomes.

The role will cover a wide range of environmental topics including ecology, landscape, arboriculture as well as Carbon, noise and sustainability. You may be a generalist environmental specialist or a specialist in field looking to broaden and develop yourexperience.

You may be required to work unsociable hours and will be required to drive as part of your role and will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position and during employment.

What you’ll be leading on
- Undertaking non-statutory EIA for road renewals projects
- Including protected species survey and mitigation.
- Utilising the National Highways Carbon tool to drive Carbon savings in scheme development.
- Surveying the soft estate as part of our routine inspection programme for landscape and arboriculture
- Using our project management tools, CEMAR, CDMT and confirm, to develop schemes from these inspections.
- Project manage third party suppliers who will be undertaking a proportion of the network surveys.
- Accurately forecast supplier programme costs detailing accruals and variances.
- To further develop the regional programme to achieve no net loss in biodiversity.
- This may include working with partners and projects outside of the SRN.
- Opportunity to develop our Cultural Heritage plan to enhance our regional archaeological assets.
- Working with and supporting the regional environment team with site visits
- Driving environmental improvements in projects and the wider business.
- Ensure the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity.

To be Successful
- Degree or equivalent qualification (HND, technician certificate) in relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
- Membership of professional body (e.g. CIEEM, Arboricultural Association).
- Willingness to develop understanding of National Highways internal governance, process and procedures.
- Broad knowledge of environmental assessment and mitigation
- Understanding of asset management or be willing to develop their capabilities.
- Understanding of the Highways Act or Town and Country Planning act.
- Experience of managing the environment in relation to construction.
- Familiarity with GIS.
- Solid foundation of onsite environmental assessment.
- Practical approach to delivery projects with a positive, can do, attitude.
