**Job summary**:
At HMRC we are committed to creating a great place to work for all our colleagues; an inclusive and respectful environment that reflects the diversity of the society we serve.

We want to maximise the potential of everyone who chooses to work for us and we offer a range of flexible working patterns and support to make a fulfilling career at HMRC accessible to you.

HMRC is the UK’s tax, payments and customs authority and we have a vital purpose: we collect the money that pays for the UK’s public services and help families and individuals with targeted financial support.

Digital Support and Innovation (DSI) sits within HMRC’s wider Fraud Investigation Service (FIS) responsible for the department’s civil and criminal investigation work. FIS ensures that HMRC has an effective approach to taking on the most serious tax evasion and fraud.

Working across Law Enforcement and government, DSI provides investigative tools and covert techniques to front-line investigations and works with key partners to develop and provide access to new technology and systems to enable investigators to respond to serious and complex tax evasion and crime.

**Job description**:
The Communications Exploitation Team (CET) provides a dedicated service to all Targeted Intercept (TI) supported operations, focusing on the analysis of communications events, forensic imaging and open source intelligence collection connected to Organised Crime Groups.

TI sits within Digital Support & Innovation and is responsible for the interception of communications relating to HMRC’s most serious organised crime operations working closely with other Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and the UK Intelligence Community (UKIC) to tackle emerging threats and develop new capabilities and methodologies to investigate serious organised crime.

**Person specification**:
You will be assigned to support specific TI operations to maintain, develop and analyse the current intelligence picture using a range of sensitive capabilities. You will collate and validate intelligence, use critical thinking to evaluate and prioritise credible intelligence artefacts and report findings to the TI Case Manager to progress TI operations.

This role is continuously developing to keep pace with the constantly evolving technology landscape. You will provide operational support to colleagues within TI.

You will be provided with on the job training and you will be encouraged to attend and complete advanced Open Source Intelligence training.

Targeted Intercept works closely with various UK Government Agencies. Outstanding performance in this role may present opportunities to broaden your skills and experience through loan arrangements with partner Law Enforcement and Intelligence Agencies.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Capture intelligence using specialist assets to progress and support criminal investigations.
- React to time critical events in live investigations.
- Communicate technical issues effectively to others.
- Create tradecraft and exploitation techniques in an agile operational environment and supply these to the wider TI community to redefine serious organised criminality.
- Prepare accurate and timely reports.
- Carry out open source research identifying intelligence that will contribute to TI investigations.
- Build effective links with equivalent colleagues across the law enforcement and intelligence communities.
- Utilise Communication Data capabilities to progress criminal investigations.
- Analyse a range of intercept and other intelligence sources and report on findings.

**Essential criteria**:

- Possess high levels of motivation, initiative and problem-solving abilities.
- Possess good attention to detail and be able to follow Standard Operating Procedures accurately and consistently.
- Good interpersonal skills to work effectively with departmental colleagues and other Law Enforcement and Intelligence partners.
- Have good verbal and written communication skills.

**Desirable criteria**:

- Experience of supporting criminal or civil investigations.
- Understanding of modern-day communications technologies.

**Behaviours**:
We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:
