The virology department is seeking an enthusiastic Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team to provide a seven day service working a 37.5 hour week.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual wishing to work in an advanced laboratory environment as part of a technical team, delivering a specialist diagnostic services. You will be responsible for performance of routine and complex laboratory analysers, quality control, operational improvement, and preventative maintenance. This role is also responsible for troubleshooting and providing technical guidance to others when needed to ensure the efficient day-to-day running of a large Virology service. There will be opportunity for training through a rotational basis in both Viral serology and Molecular

The successful applicant will join a dynamic team in the Virology Laboratory based at St Thomas Hospital, which is an integral part of infections sciences and works closely with the trusts High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) unit.

The post holder will participate in a variety of practical work carried out by the Virology section on a rotational basis. Main Duties will include the processing Viral serology and Molecular samples under the supervision of Biomedical scientists and will be involved with stock ordering, record keeping and maintenance of equipment and analysers

The post holder would be expected to join a team of MLAs that work 37.5 hours/week and be prepared to work as part of an extended working day rota that includes week day Core (9.00am to 5.30pm), Early (8.00am to 16.30pm), and Late (11.30am to 20.00pm) shifts. All staff work weekends and bank Holidays as part of rota system.

No formal qualifications are required although a good standard of education (to GCSE level or equivalent) is necessary and as the department is computerised, keyboard skills would be a great advantage. Applicants should be organized; with good communication and team working skills with the ability to work effectively. Full in-service training will be provided. Experience in stock control would be advantageous.

The post holder will ensure standards as required by the ISO15189 are maintained.

Synnovis Analytics is responsible for the provision of Pathology testing services to patients and customers

Infection Sciences provides a comprehensive range of out of hours (OOH) 24/7 Microbiology and extended working day (EWD) virology services and is sited at St Thomas’ hospital. A team of Consultant and SpR’s provide clinical liaison cover. The laboratory is well equipped, fully computerised and has obtained UKAS ISO15189 accreditation.

The department currently uses Pathnet computer LIMS system, with a new integrated LIMS being built for 2023 and Q-Pulse as the QMS software. The Department also has a range of automation including Qiagen Qiasymphony, Ausdiagnostis, Hologic Panthers and ABI and Rotorgenes for Molecular testing. Abbott Architects and Diasorin Liaisons make up the serology laboratory with an extensive portfolio of manual tests

You will have a suite of learning opportunities available through The Synnovis Way Development programme, the Scientific Learning and Development Fund and the Synnovis Academy through which you can receive funding / support for advanced qualifications.

The department has an established rotational plan for both viral serology and molecular where you will gain experience with an array of viral analysers and complete training manuals and competencies for records.

**The post holders will be responsible for**:
Technical
- Advise service users on sample preservation and transportation to laboratory
- Prepare pack and dispatch samples for transfer to other service users and referral laboratories.
- Prepare laboratory reagents including chemical solutions according to SOPs and in accordance with Health and Safety protocols
- To receive and prepare specimens for testing using automated, semi-automated and manual methods. This requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Perform automated, semi-automated and manual processing of specimens within training parameters and where appropriate under the supervision of senior staff.
- Process samples under supervision for clinical trials and research and development projects as and when required
- Ensure quality control measures are carried out to monitor analytical performance, take corrective action where applicable and report any failures to a senior member of staff
- Use of various laboratory equipment for analysis of samples and investigations.
- Set up equipment for use by other members of staff in accordance with Sop’s.
