An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the busy South West Imaging Training Academy (SWITA) team as the Sonography Lead Practice Educator, band 8a. SWITA is committed to developing and enhancing training opportunities for all professionals involved in imaging. This role will work to improve the recruitment, retention and training for the Sonography workforce by managing and facilitating the Peninsula Sonography hub, supporting both trainee Sonographers and Radiologists.

The post holder will be based predominantly at the SWITA and manage all aspects of the ultrasound service including having managerial responsibility for Imaging Support Workers. The post will involve responsibility of the clinical governance and day to day running of the ultrasound hub in partnership with the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPT) protocols and guidelines, and Local Sonography Leads.

The post holder will be supported to undertake a Pg Cert in Clinical Education and registration with the CoR as an Accredited Practice Educator.

**Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.**

UHPT is the largest hospital trust in the South West Peninsula and is a teaching trust in partnership with Plymouth Medical School. The Ultrasound Department prides itself on the quality of its ultrasound scanning and reporting service. The Ultrasound team at UHPT consists of 19 qualified Sonographers. Our organisational structure includes these posts: Superintendent Sonographer (8a), Advanced Practice Sonographer (8a), Consultant Sonographer (8b), Consultant Practitioner in MSK (8b) and Consultant Radiologists with a special interest in Ultrasound.

SWITA has 3 fully functional ultrasound room where selected patients are brought for teaching in calm and controlled surroundings. In addition to these rooms, SWITA possess state-of-the-art Ultrasound Simulators to support training. Utilisation of the existing resources will enable training and supervision capacity to be expanded quickly and much more cost effectively across the South West, utilising innovation in training through rapid at scale adoption of technology enhanced learning and new multi-disciplinary learning models.

To develop links with internal and external education providers, and other external parties.

Supervise and structure practice-based learning, bringing together academic theory, workplace practice and help trainees to develop skills and competencies towards learning outcomes, assessment and qualification.

Identify funding opportunities for sonographers, working with the SWITA Radiography Education Lead and NHSE.

Signpost staff to educational and development opportunities and act as advocate to ensure access to these opportunities

Responsible for allocated trainee sonographers, radiologists and student radiographers, - assist with their education and clinical appraisal (assess training needs and set objectives, review of written work, act as appraiser and carry out assessment giving constructive performance feedback and review of achievements).

Liaise with ultrasound leads and designated appraisers to report progress of trainee/ preceptee.

Work collaboratively with trainees and educational providers to ensure students can access help and support, including raising concerns related to the trainees’ wellbeing and/or mental health, in a pastoral care element to the role.

Create a simulation program to enhance and develop skills of trainees within the Peninsula hub, using current simulation equipment. Explore new ways of Technology Enhanced Learning and simulation and feedback to the SWITA and UHP Sonography Leadership teams around new and innovate ways of teaching and learning.

Formulate a preceptorship programme and provide guidance on what is expected of sonographers as they develop
