**Job summary**:
The Department for International Trade (DIT) is responsible for promoting British trade across the world. DIT secures UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment. We have offices in the UK and an overseas network across the world.

You will join a growing and vibrant analytical community bringing together analysts across social research, economics, operational research and statistics. Analytical teams underpin the department’s activities, providing critical research to shape its strategic development.

The Monitoring and Evaluation Strategy and Delivery Team sits within the Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) Directorate. The team includes a mix of social researchers, economists, performance analysts and statisticians. DDaT has a vacancy for a Research Officer. The role helps to objectively assess the effectiveness of our digital offer throughout the product lifecycle, helping to identify recommendations for improving digital products. The role provides opportunities to utilise qualitative and quantitative research skills and develop experience in evaluation, data analysis and project management. You will work closely with other professions to gain awareness of formal evaluation criteria including value for money.

We are a small and flexible team that recognises the importance of your personal development and welcome the opportunity to adapt the roles to your interests.

**Job description**:
**Research Officer**
- Working as a part of a team to help plan monitoring and evaluation activities for digital products across their lifespan, from inception to retirement. Ensuring that we use appropriate methodologies, meet relevant professional standards and deliver value for money.
- Carry out or commission qualitative and quantitative research to support evaluation activities; this could include a range of techniques such as interviewing users of services, quantitative surveys of users or analysing data from a range of sources.
- Work closely with wider project teams to champion the benefits of monitoring and evaluation and help them develop practical actions to improve digital products using insight from research findings.
- Maintain an active interest and engagement with research across DIT more generally ensuring insight from different areas is fully utilised, that could for example involve contributing to large scale business surveys or ad hoc qualitative projects.

We are a friendly multi-disciplinary team and offer opportunities to develop both your research and monitoring & evaluation skills.

**Hybrid Working**

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

**Person specification**:
**Essential Criteria**
- Must be a member of the Government Social Research Profession (GSR) or hold the requisite qualifications and pass the GSR knowledge test if not already a member.
- Previous experience of contributing to either internal or externally commissioned research projects, working with stakeholders to meet their needs.

**Person Specification**

The role provides opportunities to develop transferable skills which can be valuable for higher grades. These include seeing the wider evidence landscape across the departmental research portfolio and developing influencing skills to raise analysis standards and leverage the value of research projects for wider benefit across teams. You will have good written and oral communication skills and an ability to articulate key concepts to analysts from different professions and successfully work together.

The role would be a good fit for an organised problem solver with good technical skills and attention to detail, who enjoys advising colleagues and has good communication skills to build relationships with a variety of stakeholders. You will be expected to develop a working knowledge of the department’s analytical teams and build relationships across them to deliver a quality service. Prior experience of using analytical techniques in delivering soci
