Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Advanced Rhinology Skull Base Fellow for a period of 12 months commencing October 2024. This post will provide senior trainees who have completed the majority of their training with an opportunity to gain further experience in all aspects of rhinology and skull base surgery as part of a large and well established multidisciplinary team.

To be considered for the post applicants must be senior trainees, ideally Post CCT or Year 6. Please note that this post does not carry formal training recognition.

Main duties of the job

Duties are at the Queen’s Medical Centre Campus, Nottingham University Hospitals.

There are two rhinologists at NUH and there is opportunity for wide exposure for sinus surgery, rhinoplasty and skull base surgery. There are also specialist multidisciplinary clinics (Vasculitis, pituitary) as well as a Skull Base and pituitary MDT meetings. The post would allow for exposure anterior skull base surgery for pituitary tumours and other skull base lesions. There is close collaboration with the neurosurgeons, oral maxillofacial surgeons and opthalmologists.

The fellow may take part in the ‘hot week’ and middle tier of the on-call provision for the department, when they will be supervising emergency cases, and ward patients.

Our ENT department provides a comprehensive range of ORL-HNS services, and is organised on a sub specialty basis. The department is situated in a purpose built PFI building and is shared with Ophthalmology. There is a 34 bedded inpatient/day case ward for adults, shared with Maxillofacial Surgery and Ophthalmology and a 22 bedded paediatric surgical specialty ward. There are 3 ENT operating theatres with a wide range of equipment including new 4K Karl Storz endoscopy stacks, microscopes, navigation as well as new otology drills being procured. In addition, there over £600K worth of new state-of-the-art videoendoscopic equipment to equip our outpatient consulting rooms.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

The fellow will be a senior non-consultant member of the ENT department. The Fellow will receive a comprehensive training in rhinology and anterior skull base. The success of the Fellowship is dependent upon integration into the existing firms of the consultants such that teaching, training and clinical experience is maximised for all concerned. The general duties such as organisation and running of clinics and operating lists in the consultants’ absence are commensurate with the position of a senior member of the firm.

Teaching

Ongoing teaching, both formally and informally, is a strength within the directorate. It is anticipated that the fellow will be involved in teaching junior doctors and allied professions. In line with the current emphasis upon quality clinical care, audit within the directorate is one of the priorities and again active involvement and commitment is encouraged and anticipated.

Research, Governance and Audit

The fellow is expected to work with members of the Consultant staff to design, carry out and write up research projects and audit.

Teaching

Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching to multidisciplinary groups

Desirable criteria
- Completion of ‘Train the Trainer’ or Teaching Skills’ course
- Presentations at local/ regional/ national meetings

Experience

Essential criteria
- Good and wide ranging recent experience of ENT in acute inpatient settings in large acute hospitals
- Minimum of five years as a Type 1 (NTN/VTN) Specialist Trainee in ENT or equivalent

Desirable criteria
- Project management experience.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent
- Full GMC Registration with licence to practice in the UK
- FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent
- Post-CCT ENT or equivalent (or nearing completion of specialist training)

- Distinction, prizes or honours during Postgraduate training
