Cambridge, United Kingdom Wellcome Sanger Institute Full time

Do you want to help us improve human health and understand life on Earth? Make your mark by shaping the future to enable or deliver life-changing science to solve some of humanity's greatest challenges.

**About the Role**:
Would you like to help shape the future of pathogen surveillance? We have an exciting opportunity for a laboratory **Staff Scientist**, who is passionate about respiratory viruses and the microbiome and excited about the goals of our institute, to join the team led by Dr Ewan Harrison.

**About You**:
This is a key laboratory based Staff Scientist position providing the successful applicant an exciting opportunity to lead new research projects working with collaborators, from different sectors, on a national scale.

The role purpose is to perform original multidisciplinary research as part of the Respiratory virus and microbiome initiative (RVI). Implement wet lab workflows to maximise value of samples in this area, including short read, linked read, long read, and targeted sequencing. Advance the state of the field with novel analyses or wet lab methods. Set the team standards for wet lab work (ELNs where required, sample tracking, SOP organization, reproducible research, Health and Safety). Provide support for less experienced team members. Design and execute experiments with the help of other team members.

This will involve performing technically demanding and complex research and development experiments and establishing laboratory quality control and assurance processes. You will lead original research, develop, test and record new methodology, Furthermore, you will use your knowledge and skills to support the modification and refinement of SOPs as part of process optimisation, trouble shooting and adaptation.

As a member of the RVI team, will contribute to the planning and development of the strategy of the RVI. You will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders integral to the project's progress. Furthermore, you will identify projects and opportunities and associated risks. Inherent in this role is the ability to work alongside the PI to mentor, manage and train less experienced members of the group in lab. Moreover, you will lead on the writing of scientific publications, reports and presentation using RVI data including presenting data at internal meetings and international scientific conferences.

**About Us**:
One of the biggest challenges in the battle against infectious disease is that pathogens are continually evolving. Genomic surveillance involves sequencing the genetic material of pathogenic microbes and their vectors so that evolutionary changes that affect transmission, disease severity and susceptibility to treatment can be observed.

The Respiratory Virus and Microbiome Initiative (RVI) is a new initiative with the Parasites and Microbes (PaM) programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. RVI aims to establish the next generation sequencing methods for routine genomic surveillance of respiratory viruses and other pathogens, including during a future epidemic/pandemic.

As a laboratory based Staff Scientist in the RVI team, you will join a dynamic and collaborative multi-disciplinary team with expertise in pathogen genomics for research and public health, and laboratory microbiology. The team has particular interest in the microorganisms and pathogens that infect and colonise the upper respiratory tract.

As a member of the Harrison team, you will play a key role in the successful delivery of RVI's goals:

- Generation of knowledge on the transmission and evolution of respiratory viruses and other pathogens.
- Discovery of novel respiratory viruses to inform early warning systems for new pandemic threats.
- Deeper understanding of respiratory microbiome dynamics and how this influences health and infection.
- Tracking and understanding antimicrobial resistance in the respiratory tract at a population level.
- Contribute to the development of high throughput and low-cost sequencing methodology suitable for global use for pathogen genomics.

**Technical Skills**:

- PhD in biological sciences or equivalent relevant laboratory/research experience
- Experience in the development of molecular diagnostics for pathogens
- High proficiency with molecular biology techniques including RNA/DNA extraction, RT-PCR, qPCR
- Experience of high throughput working
- Experience of health and safety at CL2 and CL3
- Experience of working at Containment Level 2
- Ability to test, implement and troubleshoot new approaches and techniques.

**Competencies and Behaviours**:

- Ability to work effectively, both independently and within a team, contributing to discussions and disseminating knowledge and information
- Resilient and self-motivated to take learnings from unsuccessful experiments
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Highly developed problem-solving skills
- Demonstrates inclusivity and respect for all
- Ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders

**Other Information**:
