An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our busy Genomics Laboratory as a Genetic Technologist or Biomedical Scientist*.

The Cambridge Genomic Laboratory (East GLH) is looking to recruit several Band 5 Technical staff within our wet laboratory to perform specialist genomic processes. Laboratory technical experience and training others is an essential requirement for this highly skilled role.

Experience in a laboratory performing diagnostic molecular tests is highly desirable as the vacancies are within teams performing the following techniques:

  • Manual and automated DNA / RNA extractions from a variety of biological samples for both the Rare Disease, Haemato-oncology and Cancer services.
  • Assays such as targeted sequencing and disease monitoring tests for the Haem-Onc and Cancer service
  • Microarray testing for Rare Disease and Haem-Onc.
  • Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) for Rare Disease, Haem-Onc & Cancer.

The Laboratory is part of the East NHS Genomic Laboratory Hub. This is one of seven Genomic Hubs established to provide the National Genomic Medicine Service for NHS England, led by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and working with Nottingham University Hospital and University Hospital Leicester.

*HCPC regististration protected title. HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists are encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

1. Perform a broad spectrum of diagnostic tests.

2. Supervision and training of other technologists and unqualified staff.

3. Work towards or maintain registration with the AHCS or HCPC.

4. Computer manipulation and analysis of data for diagnostic tests.

Job responsibilities

Hours are currently within our current opening hours of 8am to 6pm, however the laboratory may soon be open 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and at weekends, so flexibility is desirable.

Qualifications

Essential


  • IBMS Accredited Biomedical Science degree or BSc degree in an appropriate Biological Science or equivalent.
  • For Biomedical Scientist: oIBMS Certificate of Competence oHCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist

Desirable


  • Training in an accredited medical genetics laboratory
  • Registration with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS).
