The post holder will work under the direction of the AHWRC Head of zoo to help ensure the husbandry and care of the mammals within the AHWRC are of the highest standard, and to enhance delivery of practical husbandry training to groups of students.
The mammal enclosures of the AHWRC have undergone significant development and will see a number of exciting new species coming into the centre this year. As a mammal keeper you will have input into the development of the species collection plan and be integral in developing husbandry for the selected new species.
The role will be primarily focused on mammal sections but there is opportunity to learn other sections of the AHWRC.
The post holder will:
- Be responsible for the day-to-day husbandry of a range of exotic mammal species. There are plans to increase and diversify the species housed on this section so a desire to learn and implement new husbandry and care techniques is essential. A passion for animal training is also required.
- Work closely with other AHWRC staff to ensure high standards of animal husbandry. This will be achieved through demonstration of daily cleaning routines and training and supervision of students in practical husbandry sessions.
- Instill correct best practice in students and provide and engaging and interactive learner experience.
A positive and flexible approach to a varied workload, real enthusiasm for the animals you work with, and an affinity for working with young learners are essential. Some educational or supervisory experience would be advantageous.
A full drivers licence is desirable but not essential.
The role entails weekend and Bank Holiday working on a rota basis.
This post is based at the Sparsholt campus. The AHWRC is Zoo-Licensed and BIAZA accredited, with exciting plans for major new developments.
