London, United Kingdom Hope for the Young Full time

Job description

**About Hope for the Young**

Hope for the Young’s mission is to remove the obstacles to young refugees and asylum-seekers’ education and wellbeing through mentoring, advocacy, and financial support.

Over the past year, Hope for the Young has grown considerably. Over the next 12 months we are set to scale our programmes further and provide over 200 young people with tailored mentoring, advocacy, and financial support.

We currently have a team of 9 staff members and over 100 Volunteer Mentors. As we begin to develop our next 3-5-year strategy, we are seeking an innovative and ambitious Head of Programmes who can lead our programme team through this critical next phase of growth, supporting Hope for the Young to constantly improve and provide the best services for all those that we work alongside.

**Our Programmes**

The Mentoring Programme supports young refugees and asylum-seekers aged 16-25 by matching them with trained volunteer mentors who provide weekly one-to-one support tailored to their needs. Mentors help with teaching English, enrolment advice, study skills, confidence and trust-building and can provide emotional and practical support that help young people access new services, adapt, and settle into their new communities.

The Grants and Advocacy Programme supports young people who, due to their immigration status, have no access to student finance to enable them to go to college or university. We provide small grants to pay for tuition fees, living allowances and travel expenses alongside a tailored package of advocacy support to enable young people to access and complete their education in the UK.

**About this role**

We are looking for an exceptional leader to take on this brand-new role at Hope for the Young - somebody we can count on to ensure that our programmes are delivered in line with our strategy, and that our culture of shared learning and collaboration remain alive and strong as our team and services expand.

As the Head of Programmes, you will be responsible for overseeing the delivery and expansion of Hope for the Young’s main two programme areas. You will oversee operations, staff, delivery, budgets and reporting. You will ensure that key targets are met, delivery is of an exceptional standard, and that young people accessing Hope for the Young’s services receive effective and meaningful support.

You will have strong programme management, people management, interpersonal, analytical and numeracy skills. You will lead on safeguarding, oversee effective monitoring and evaluation, and be responsible for overseeing our new Youth Participation and Engagement Strategy to increase opportunities for young people during and after their time with Hope for the Young.

We are looking for somebody with a track record of delivering high quality services and impact to community groups and ideally somebody with a background in, or strong knowledge of the needs and common challenges of young refugees and asylum seekers.

You will also be required to cultivate and maintain excellent working relationships with key stakeholders such as local authorities, trusts and foundations, charity partners, and our supporters. You will be comfortable representing the charity externally and providing accurate and timely reporting.

Being part of a small team, you will play a crucial role in shaping Hope for the Young’s next 3-5-year strategy as we grow and support more young people than ever before.

Due to the nature of the programme, flexibility will be key to success, and you may be required to travel across London and the UK to attend meetings. We offer a flexible and hybrid working environment, however, you will be expected to come to our office in Brixton for a minimum of 2 days per week.

**Key responsibilities**

**1. **Programme Management**:

- Developing annual objectives and delivery plans for all programmes in line with the

organisational strategy.
- Overseeing the delivery of all programmes, ensuring that key delivery targets are met, and young people receive effective and meaningful support.
- Manage the budget and running costs for the programmes, attend grant panel meetings, and oversee approval of education grant payments in line with our procedures.
- Identify any areas of concern during the implementation of programmes and provide guidance and support to staff to manage risk, solve problems and ensure high quality delivery.
- Developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure consistent operations, organisation culture, and the staff team’s understanding of their role in achieving objectives.
- Oversee Hope for the Young’s annual party, award ceremonies, and social events to recognise young people’s achievements and maintain a strong sense of community.

**2. **Programme Development and Strategy**
- Lead on internal innovation projects and implement improvements to programmes which will strengthen Hope for the Young’s operations and ensure ser
