**About HM Treasury**

If you’re interested in making a difference to people’s lives across the country, the Treasury is the department for you We sit at the centre of everything that the Government does and have provided advice on economic policy and decisions that affect the public finances throughout the country’s history. A Treasury career continues to offer an exciting opportunity to be part of the decision making that affects the whole of the UK.

Working at the heart of government, we collaborate with other departments to ensure public money is spent well and to drive strong and sustainable economic growth. Our work ranges from protecting customers through to the regulation of the financial sector, helping to reduce carbon emissions and creating a greener economy, supporting people across the country through the COVID 19 furlough scheme and Plan for Jobs as well as helping first time buyers buy their first home.
- and late-career changers with transferrable skills, people from all backgrounds and circumstances regardless of disability, gender, age ethnicity, LGBT+ identity and socio-economic status.

The Darlington Economic Campus is a pioneering new cross-government hub which will bring people together across departments and public organisations to play an active role in the most important issues of the day.

HM Treasury in Darlington will be joined by the Department for International Trade, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Office for National Statistics, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, the Competition and Markets Authority, the Department for Education and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

**Job description**:
**Fiscal Group**

Fiscal Group works on a wide-ranging and exciting set of issues which are at the heart of the Treasury’s objectives. We are responsible for ensuring the sustainability of the government’s finances - over both the medium and long term - to support economic stability and growth. This means making sure that the government has enough revenue to meet its spending commitments. Work in this area includes advising the Chancellor on the appropriate levels of borrowing and debt, overseeing financing raised for the government by the Debt Management Office and National Savings & Investments, and managing the daily flow of cash across the public sector.

**The Team**

The Macroeconomic Policy (MP) team of around 15 people is responsible for developing the department’s thinking and advising ministers on macroeconomic policy. This includes short-term fiscal policy and monetary policy strategy, and the interaction between the two. The team also produces longer-term research and projects exploring a range of analytical and policy issues, related to macroeconomics. We work across the Fiscal and Economics groups, collaborating closely with teams across HM Treasury, using a combination of macroeconomic and fiscal analysis to ensure the government’s macroeconomic policy supports strong, sustainable growth to improve people’s lives.

We are committed to ensuring the team is a fun, engaging and inclusive place to work, where everyone is supported to develop and progress.

**The role**

The Treasury’s macroeconomic strategy shapes our short term fiscal policy, assessing the appropriate level of government borrowing in the short term, taking into account monetary policy and the broader state of the economy. This means it sits at the heart of the Treasury’s objectives to place the public finances on a sustainable footing, and ensure the stability of the macroeconomic environment. These objectives underpin the ability of the economy to grow sustainably, improving living standards for the people of the UK.

**Key accountabilities**
- Developing the Treasury’s position on macroeconomic policy strategy, by producing analysis and collaborating with a range of teams across the Economics and Fiscal Groups and wider department.
- Advising the Chancellor, other Ministers and the Treasury’s Executive Management Board (EMB) on the government’s macroeconomic strategy, including the stance of fiscal policy in the short term.
- Working closely with planning and spending teams, as well as policy teams across the wider Treasury, to ensure that macroeconomic policy is fully considered in policy making and decisions.
- Leading the Macroeconomic Strategy Board secretariat, shaping and s
