Job Introduction

The Route Services Environment & Sustainable Development (E&SD) team is responsible for providing strategic steer and expert technical input on all aspects of Environment & Sustainable Development across Route Services, supporting and enabling the organisation to meet its compliance obligations, manage risks, maximise opportunities and build capability to deliver sustainable outcomes.

As a team that sits within The Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) team, the E&SD team works closely with its SHEQ colleagues to empower others to identify, drive and deliver sustainable outcomes to support the business with a Railway Fit for the Future, Everyone Home Safe Everyday and Everyone Fit for the Future.

In this role, you will provide support to the Route Services Environment & Sustainable Development team which is responsible for enabling the organisation to meet its compliance obligations, effectively manage risks & opportunities and deliver the most sustainable solutions (products & services) to its customers. The role will include collating and process business intelligence information, providing advice and guidance on technical environmental queries and supporting E&SD comms and campaigns including sustainability moment of the week.

**The RS E&SD Team is a nationwide team which involves travel to any site, supplier or activity across the Route Services’ Portfolio. The post holder will be expected to attend regular team meetings in Milton Keynes and London as well as occasional travel across the country for site visits.***

Main Responsibilities
To provide assistance to the Environment & Sustainable Development team, enabling Route Services to meet its compliance obligations, take informed decisions and effectively manage risks & opportunities.
- Support the Environment & Sustainable Development team in the implementation of Network Rail environmental & social sustainability strategy, business objectives and performance measures to enable Route Services to meet its responsibilities for the management of key environmental & social impacts.
- Deliver and produce regular progress reports relating to relevant risks and issues, to support the business decision making processes.
- Provide advice and guidance on the hazardous and non-hazardous waste processes to maintain legal compliance.
- Provide support for the implementation and maintenance of the Route Services Environmental Management System (EMS), such as taking and circulating minutes for scheduled review meetings, tracking actions, monitoring progress against objectives and targets, and assisting with document control.
- Assist the team in carrying out assurance activities, including low risk audits and routine checks on facilities, suppliers and contractors’ environmental performance to prevent non-compliances and enable continuous improvement.
- Support the team in the delivery of awareness campaigns, competence initiatives and the provision of advice and guidance on environmental aspects for the business, including researching emerging environmental topics and presenting summary findings for the team.

- Good understanding of UK environmental legislative framework
- Relevant experience of supporting environmental management initiatives and projects

Desirable
- IEMA foundation certificate in environmental management or NEBOSH environmental management certificate, or equivalent
- Knowledge and experience of the railway operating environment
