Applications are invited for a substantive consultant post in the Older People’s Medicine (OPM) directorate.

The department has a wide range (or broad spectrum) of interests and responsibilities from a short stay unit, acute OPM wards encompassing an ortho-geriatric unit and rehabilitation within the local community hospitals. We have a dementia focussed ward and we have a dementia support team that provide holistic input into the care journeys of this patient group. Our OPED unit has had national press coverage for its innovative approach to care for frail elderly patients presenting to the ED.

There is the opportunity for flexible job plans and flexible working patterns, including job shares and part time work.

We have close ties with the acute medical unit and can offer options for sessional work in these departments as part of a job plan if desired.

This is a substantive consultant appointment to the Older People’s Medicine (OPM) department. In the last 4 years, there has been an expansion of the department’s work and involvement with frailty in the Emergency Department creating the UKs first Older Persons Emergency Department (OPED). Successful applicants would join a team of 19 consultant geriatricians. It is anticipated the postholder would engage in the core activities of the department, as well as have the opportunity to develop subspecialty interests, in particular in acute frailty work. Applicants will be required to take part in the OPED weekend rota (0800 to 1800). There are also opportunities to consider taking part in the Trusts Acute Medicine and physician of the day rota.

Job plans are flexible and include core activities such as taking responsibility for the care of inpatients under Older Peoples Medicine (OPM) in the Norfolk and Norwich University hospital. Post holders are also required to see patients of other specialties when they are referred for an opinion. There will be sessional work for assessing frail older patients in the Emergency Department or in the Acute Medical Unit. There is also the opportunity to be involved in partnership working within the local community units.

As a university teaching hospital we have developed our research and development strategy with the UEA and work with partners at the Norwich Research Park. There are numerous opportunities for the post holder to undertake teaching roles on sessional basis as well as research programmes.

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the biggest hospitals in England with approximately 1000 beds, situated in the heart of Norfolk. Norwich is a picturesque, pleasant City in the heart of Norfolk, London (1.5 hours by car, and train access is also less than two hours (From London Liverpool Street, no changes).
