**Job summary**:
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is the department for economic growth. We support businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the country.

The Permanent Secretary is responsible for running the day-to-day activities of the Department and serves as the Secretary of State’s most senior advisor. As the Accounting Officer, the Permanent Secretary is accountable to Parliament for how the Department spends public money.

The Perm Sec’s office sits within the Private Office Group (POG). Private offices are the primary conduit between these key individuals - our ‘principals’ - and the wider Department.

The SPS to the Perm Sec position offers unprecedented exposure to the top-level workings of the Department for Business and Trade. Like all SPS roles, the work is extremely varied and fast-paced. As SPS, you will lead a large private office team of 5 to help deliver the Permanent Secretary’s priorities across the entire departmental brief. You will oversee the efficient functioning of the team, ensuring processes and operations run smoothly, whilst supporting and enabling the development of your team. You will be a trusted advisor to the Permanent Secretary on a range of complex and sensitive matters.

You will also act as conduit between the Permanent Secretary team and the rest of the Department. You will develop and maintain positive and effective relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including other private offices, to ensure you are well-informed on cross-departmental business and to scan for risks and opportunities on the horizon.

In return, we can offer a job that:

- Gives you frequent access to the department’s most senior stakeholders, including ministers and senior officials;
- Is both challenging and rewarding, and part of a high performing and supportive environment where people can bring their whole selves to work; and
- Has particular stretch for the G7 grade - providing a sound base to develop skills that will benefit your Civil Service career, in addition to valuable experience working at the top level of a government department.

This role will require you to take part in a duty rota, work some unsocial hours and travel with the Permanent Secretary - internationally and domestically - when required. For this, a private office allowance is payable to the successful applicant while in post.

**Job description**:
Key responsibilities include:

- Leading the Private Office team to drive forward the Permanent Secretary’s priorities. This will include identifying and making opportunities and risks, and providing constructive challenge to ensure outcomes are delivered.
- Ensuring the Permanent Secretary’s priorities are communicated, understood and implemented.
- Providing advice and recommendations to the Permanent Secretary and wider leadership team, including on sensitive policy, propriety and ethics and personnel matters.
- Continuously improving how the team operates to ensure the smooth and effective running of the office. This will include coaching and developing your team to deliver a high-quality service to the Permanent Secretary.
- Forging strong relationships across the Department, Whitehall and with external stakeholders to help advance departmental priorities.
- Building a positive and inclusive culture within the team and the wider Private Office Group, leading bespoke corporate activities to ensure DBT is a great place to work.
- Management of a team of 5: direct line management of 3 (2 SEOs and 1 HEO), with countersigning responsibilities for an additional 2 HEOs.

**Person specification**:
**Essential Criteria**
- Excellent leadership skills to support and develop your team to deliver results in challenging circumstances.
- Resilience to absorb pressure, think clearly and project calm in difficult situations.
- Emotional intelligence to work collaboratively with, and deliver through, a large and diverse group of stakeholders. In addition, the confidence to appropriately challenge others where necessary.
- High levels of personal organisation even in a high-pressure and fast-paced environment. This includes the ability to create and maintain effective team structures, processes and divisions of responsibility.
- Excellent communications skills, with the
